George Bush is afraid to meet Cindy Sheehan.
A sunburned and defiant mother whose son died in Iraq remained camped outside President George Bush’s Texas ranch Monday, demanding a meeting.
Cindy Sheehan, 48, of Vacaville, Calif., garnered massive media attention during the weekend, appearing on all major networks with her demand for a return of all U.S. troops from Iraq right away.
Her 24-year-old son, Casey Sheehan, was one of eight U.S. soldiers killed in Baghdad by rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire on April 4, 2004. Bush met with Sheehan and other bereaved families in Washington state last June, but she said she wasn’t given the opportunity to ask Bush her question:
“I want to ask the president, why did he kill my son?” Sheehan told reporters.
The New York Times said the woman’s sudden fame could be problematic for the vacationing Bush, who usually comes and goes from the ranch by helicopter. But he might have to drive by her on Friday, when he is scheduled to attend a Republican fundraiser at a ranch just down the road from where she is camped out.
Ms. Sheehan has many supporters with her in Crawford.
This reminds me of Max Cleland’s attempt to deliver a letter of complaint about the Swift Boat lies to Bush at his faux ranch last year. Chimpy did not have the guts to face Cleland, either.
