One Down…..sort of

One of Washington’s top lobbying operations will shut down at the end of the month because of its ties to disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff and former House majority leader Tom DeLay.

Alexander Strategy Group, which had thrived since its founding in 1998 thanks largely to its close connections to DeLay (R-Tex.), will cease to operate except for a relatively small business-development division, Edwin A. Buckham, the former top DeLay aide who owns the company, said yesterday.

“Reports in the press have made it difficult to continue as a lobbying/political entity,” Buckham said.

Buckham’s firm employed DeLay’s wife, Christine, for four years. It also benefited by working closely with Abramoff. Abramoff’s plea agreement mentioned his close ties to Tony C. Rudy, one of Buckham’s colleagues at ASG, identified in the court papers as “Staffer A.”

The 12 lobbyists who now work at ASG — other than Rudy and Buckham — intend to start a successor firm and intend to keep as many of the clients as possible, according to one of the lobbyists.

Looks liike the vast majority of Americans won’t be crying for ASG and wouldn’t think much of its spawn…..

An ABC News Poll finds…

— 90% Americans favor banning lobbyists from giving members of Congress anything of value

–Two-thirds also would bar lobbyists from making direct campaign contributions.

–54% would make it illegal for lobbyists even to organize fund-raisers on behalf of congressional candidates

–Nearly six in 10 Americans see lobbyist Jack Abramoff’s plea deal as a sign of widespread corruption in Washington

However there is this…

Abramoff (like DeLay) is a Republican, and the Democrats have sought to turn the ethics issue to their advantage. There’s no sign yet that it’s working: Essentially, no more people say the Democrats are more ethical and honest than the Republicans (15 percent) as say the opposite (11 percent). Nearly three-quarters, instead, say there’s not much difference between them.

Amazing. The Republican leadership of Congress (and an unkown number of other Republicans) are up to their eyeballs in scandal. Not One Democrat comes anywhere close to what Republicans are facing, yet they are painted with the same brush as Republicans.

Dems have some work to do. Where’s the “liberal media” when they need them???

UPDATE: A CBS NEWs Poll is quite similar…

Republicans 34%

Democrats 34%

But the Republicans have lost a 23 point advatage on this since 1999.

Republicans in Congress 34%

Democrats in Congress 18%

Same 30%
