On Wednesday we were told he didn’t really mean it.
One day after President Bush vowed to reduce America’s dependence on Middle East oil by cutting imports from there 75 percent by 2025, his energy secretary and national economic adviser said Wednesday that the president didn’t mean it literally.
Apparently no one told him he didn’t mean it before his appearance in Minnesota yesterday.
Now, people say, well, if you can get the technology and you got the cars, how come it takes until 2025 to reduce — significantly reduce dependence on the Middle Eastern oil? Well, the answer is, we got a lot of automobiles and it takes a while for the fleet to turn over. Things just don’t happen instantly when it comes to an automobile fleet.
And so — but what I’m telling you is, and what I’m telling the American people is, research is going to lead to an important breakthrough here, when it comes to our energy. I’m confident that we’ll be able to say to the American people when this research is complete, that the United States is on our way to no dependence on oil from the Middle East.
