Journalists In Danger

People wonder why I don’t find conservatives’ violent rhetoric with regards to journalists cute. This is why:

According to the follow up of the cases carried out by FEPALC Human Rights Secretary and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) in 2005 fourteen media workers lost their lives and two disappeared. However, from January to October 2006 both institutions have documented and denounced thirty two (32) journalists murdered and two (2) colleagues are missing, murders cases in Guyana (6), Mexico (5), Venezuela (4), Colombia (4), Dominican Republic (3) and Brazil (3) have been highlighted. The increase of aggressions is evident and alarming.

It’s difficult to get people to take things like this seriously when out of our radios comes a constant stream of “they’re all traitors, they should be shot, hanged, etc.” The daily demonization of the press (I’m not talking about pointing out specific stupidity, I’m talking about the kind of borderless smears that equate the Los Angeles Times with Hard Copy and World Nut Daily) encourages an atmosphere where we shrug off the very real threat to freedom that violence against journalists represents because journalists are Across The Board Bad, and who cares then, if some of them somewhere get bumped off?
