April 16, 2007, 2:00 p.m. D.S.T. As a new educational and community blogger,I have a need to post a comment about the American University, Virginia Technical University, where the media has reported the worst university rampage and murder in the dorms at 7:15 a.m., Monday. Apparently, the incident has already been declared the worst school or university shooting in the history of the U.S.A., currently 31 killed, including the shooter. The latest report indicates that over 30 people have been wounded or injured in the tragic incident. As of 2:45 p.m., the media has indicated that this shooting has been determined to be the worst shooting, period, in American History!
As a School Counselor/Clinician for Students with Disabilities, in a southern New York State, inner city high school for 20 years (I also have an additional 18 years experience as a Teacher of learning and emotionally disabled children in N.Y., Fla., N.J., Ct., and Pa.), I am horrified by this horrible tragedy. It is unbelievable and mind boggling, that once again, we have another major, violent rampage and killing, on one of our school campuses.
Once again, in the year 2007, in our great, open, free, democratic society, we have trusted our neighbor, let our guard down, and have truly, unfortunately suffered another tremendous personal loss, on another American campus. Questions cry out! How could this happen? Who did this? And, why? Where were the university security guards or monitors? How could the perpetrator actually kill31 people, injure another 30 individuals, before he or she was stopped? Unquestionally, amazing! There are 25,000 students on campus at V.T.U., incidently, the largest number of college students on a campus in the U.S. Did we, as a nation not learn from the Columbine High School, the Amish School in Pa. and the dozen other school shootings over the last ten years.
The 60s was the decade of political assasinations, and now, in the 90s and early 2000s, it is the decade of American High School and University shootings and murder! What price do we pay to live in a free , democratic society in the United States of America? And, we always offer grief and bereavement counseling to the students and faculty/staff, which they now have announced. The therapy is necessary and very important, because of the post traumatic stress potential, as well as for people who just want to grieve and vent! I must say, though, we need to identify and make more assessments and evaluations, of those people with potential emotional and mental problems in our communities; (obviously, homicidal in these cases), BEFORE THESE VIOLENT INCIDENTS OCCUR!
In October, 2006, President George W. Bush, called for a proactive “Summit on Violence” in the Public and Private Schools in our states. I have the notes from the article in U.S.A. Today News. I spoke with my Principal and other clinicians and administrators in my school district, and informed them about the “Summit on School Violence”. The President’s mandate called for school and community programs and projects on Ant-Violence in the American Schools. I took the Summit seriously, and researched, studied and wrote a program for local Secondary Schools. No one listened to me at the time! I still have this very valuable Pilot Program, called: “OPERATION CHANGE OF HEART’ for “At Risk” Students and Adults. I am looking for minimal funding and clinical staff and teachers to implement the necessary program! Someone out there, please help me!
Now, with this last incident today, we need to come together, speak out and really become proactive and take action! We really need to offer all the help we can to the potencial angry and violent members of our society! And, we need to do it, quickly! Help me! John Raymond Moccio moche1@comcast.net
I really really hate to do this, really, but I feel I should clarify that the NRA ass-kissing comment was made in response to a question about gun law – not as part of a direct statement about the tragedy. I reacted the same way as VictoriaB above, but then went to find the original context. I will admit it’s a tiny little bit better as a response to a question. Still a totally asshole thing to say right now, but yeah…context, there ya have it.
