Attempt to Imagine

The size of this story if it was a wealthy mother and her son in a tony northwest suburb.

A 1-year-old boy was in critical condition this morning after he and his mother were shot Saturday night on the South Side by a gunman who was targeting someone else.

The shooting occurred outside in the Englewood neighborhood in the 6400 block of South Hoyne Avenue around 9:40 p.m. Saturday when two men began arguing, said Police Officer Hector Alfaro.

One of the men pulled out a gun and began firing, striking the mother, 22, and her son, who were not with the two men but were on the sidewalk in the general vicinity, police said.

The infant was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital at the University of Chicago Hospitals, where he was listed in critical condition, Alfaro said. The mother, who was in stable condition, was transported to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

The gunman was still at large this morning, Alfaro said, adding the shooting may have been gang-related.

Right now the top story in Chicago is that the weather is very nice, and the Bulls have managed to not suck it up entirely in the playoffs.

  1. stupid registration.
earlier this year on a nice day, a pregnant young woman was short instead of her boyfriend. both died.
and she was white, but it was in a heavily hispanic nieghborhood.
    stupid human tricks.

  2. You see? If that woman had been armed, her gun would have provided a magic shield that kept her from harm. Just like it does for the good guys on my TeeVee!
This, of course, is why being armed means nothing in terms of personal protection. Idiots with guns aren’t negated by other people with guns. Bullets don’t care where you mean for them to go, they follow the laws of physics. And most idiots with guns don’t know squat about physics.
But bullets are ruled by those laws. And, of course, by Murphy’s law. Which gets even grimmer, when you let guns proliferate. Or tell everybody they’ll be safer if they have a gun.

  3. It’s just a domestic shooting, since a woman was involved. Nothing to see here, move along.
Actually it would have been huge news in Indiana if the person shot had been some middle class white soccer mom and kid, or some white farmer’s wife and kid, or even an unmarried white teenager and her kid. Black, brown, yellow… who cares, they kill each other all the time since they really have no souls.
Now I know not all of the Midwest is this bad, it’s just that unless it happens to some one who could be them, people just don’t give a shit. Call it racism or outrage overload or just not caring anymore. It never registers unless the people offed look like them.

  4. By the way, that was sarcasm above, in case anyone thinks it was how I really feel. It just reflects what I have heard from my neighbors here in rural Indiana.
