Our Saudi Friends

As Dick Cheney heads to Saudi Arabia to grovel at his masters’ feet I think it’s appropriate to remember just who our allies are.

Saudi authorities on Wednesday beheaded an Ethiopian woman convicted of killing an Egyptian man over a dispute, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

Khadija Bint Ibrahim Moussa was found guilty of fatally stabbing Mohammed Kamal Shaheen, according to the statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency. Moussa had stabbed Shaheen in the neck while he was asleep and then beat his head with a glass bottle. She was executed in the Red Sea port city of Jiddah. No other details were known.

Moussa was the second woman to be executed this year. The kingdom last beheaded two women in 2005.

Saudi Arabia follows a strict interpretation of Islam under which people convicted of murder, drug trafficking, rape and armed robbery can be executed. Beheadings are carried out with a sword in a public square.

Wednesday’s executions brought to 57 the number of people beheaded in the kingdom this year. The kingdom beheaded 38 people last year and 83 people in 2005.

I’m not entirely sure what point you’re trying to make.
Is it that those Saudis are sure barbaric, backward people? Cause, you know, Saudis behead people instead of performing a Texecution with a nice, sophisticated lethal injection?
Here’s a list of the 18 men executed so far this year in the US: http://people.smu.edu/rhalperi/exec07.html
Or are you just pointing out that in this case, the kettle is a smidgen blacker than the pot? Because I would agree that Saudi Arabia has a worse record than Texas on capital punishment, though not by much.

  2. The point is, the right wing is constantly pointing to beheadings performed by the jihadisits while their hero Dick Cheney has tea and cookies with a oligarchy that itself has beheaded 57 people this year.
Furthermore, although I oppose capital punishment, I feel confident in saying that most people would consider lethal injection to be much less cruel than beheading.
