Your President Speaks! Loves The Nickname Edition

Today, at the White House, urging the Senate to confirm Admiral Michael Mullen and General James Cartwright as Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff

Obsessed With A Nickname

Mike Mullen and “Hoss” Cartwright are experienced military officers.

“Hoss’s” wife got stuck on an airplane.

I’m also nominating an outstanding military officer to serve as Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General “Hoss” Cartwright.

And since 2004, he’s served as head of the U.S. Strategic Command. In that position, “Hoss” has been in charge of America’s nuclear arsenal, missile defenses, space operations, information operations, global command and control, intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance, and our nation’s efforts to combat weapons of mass destruction. These are vital responsibilities and “Hoss” has met them with honor, skill and integrity.

Upon confirmation by the Senate, Mike Mullen and “Hoss” Cartwright will succeed two of America’s finest military officers — General Pete Pace and Admiral Ed Giambastiani.

I call on the Senate to quickly confirm Mike Mullen and “Hoss” Cartwright.

One More Nickname

I’m also grateful to Admiral Ed Giambastiani. I just call him Admiral “G.”

  1. Admiral G?
Sweet fuck, could this guy be any more condescending?
However, I should note that you can’t spell “Admiral” without “Ali.” Something to think about.

  2. Think of all the internal things that could lead to this obsession:
    *) Admiral G – that way I don’t have to learn a fureign name
*) “Hoss” reminds me of Bonanza, its a western. No reason to call him Hoss but I can remember Bonanza
*) Bonanza had clear cut villans and heroes and always ended like a fairy tale. No reason to deal with reality.

  3. It seems to me that the first names of our preznit and vice preznit ought to be switched.

  4. Have to say I’m glad you found a copy of a photo of Dan Blocker with an appropriate expression.
Before he was “Hoss,” Dan Blocker was a school teacher in West Texas (this in the 1950s, before public schools fell under W’s dumbing-down, superstitionist NCLB rule); he was an intelligent and eloquent man, who played his intellectual opposite quite well.

  5. These are vital responsibilities and “Hoss” has met them with honor, skill and integrity.
i don’t know why any of this should surprise me at this juncture, but it still has the power to render me absolutely dumbf?!?ed.
does this paragraph not truly illuminate the very essence of our current political climate? i must aver that it does.

  6. the fact that this spoiled bully insists that others address him as Mr. President, yet he can’t afford the same respect (or anything close to it) to men who have worked years to get where they are…as opposed to calling on Daddy to get what he wants. You know, when children are little their world consists of just themselves and their needs (and wants). One of the jobs of a parent is to teach the child that he/she is not the center of the universe (I can say that because I’ve done it, as a single parent). The parents of this spoiled brat should be ashamed, I know I am ashamed of this man who represents my country…

  7. Diane,
I often wonder about this combination of spoiled bully and total incompetent. In my experience, such people tend to surround themselves with spineless incompetents (spineless so they take the bullying, incompetent so they have no challenge to the bully). Just look at Shrub keeping himself shielded by Gonzalez who argues the most insane opinions, further insulated by Regents Univ products.
