Del Martin, a pioneering lesbian rights activist who married her
lifelong partner on the first day same-sex couples could legally wed in
California, has died. She was 87.
Kate Kendell, executive director of the National Center for Lesbian
Rights, says Martin died at a San Francisco hospital Wednesday morning
two weeks after a broken arm exacerbated her existing health problems.Kendell says her wife, Phyllis Lyon, was by her side.

Del apparently did a lot of work on behalf of battered women, as well as the LGBT community.
I’ll always be grateful for her/others’ efforts to get the APA shrinks to de-list gayness as a disease in late ’73. That’s the event that let me know I truly was as healthy as I’d felt all along, and nothing/no one outside of me was going to have final say over who and how I loved.

My first response was damn, they only had, what, two months? But then I thought, no, they had their whole adult lives, the paper was just the frosting.
