“What do you think this car runs on… God’s own methane?”

The person John McCain designated as America’smost knowledgeable energy expert believes that dinosaurs (whose fossils help comprise ourfossil fuels)coexisted with humans. She once saw a picture of a fossil with a human footprint on it, or something.

Maitri discusses the folly of this, and talks right down to earth in a language that everyone here can easily understand:

There is no oil for conservatives if they don’t agree that the earth may be billions of years old and don’t cease and desist with this intelligent-design-in-science-classrooms crap. After all, the gasoline that fuels the average vehicle comes from reservoirs that are anywhere between tens of thousands and tens of millions of years old. Fossils, creatures that evolved, are utilized as horizon markers that tell us where to drill. Without a geologic time scale that spans eons and eras, there is no geology and paleontology. Without geology and paleontology, there is no reaching oil. Without oil, there is nothing to put in the car.

Please note: “geology and paleontology” are not to be confused with “gerontology andpalintology“. Totally different.

  1. I’m going to cross post the comment I made over at YRHT:
“without geology and paleontology, there is no reaching oil.”
Maybe it’s just me, but I think, in a similar vein, without a thorough understanding of evolution there is no modern health care system.
It’s an insult to the scientists who’ve worked as hard as they do when Creationists dismiss their efforts with a wave of the hand and credit god.

  2. Hate to tell you, but my newspaper has a picture of a caveman and dinosaur in almost every edition. Not only that, but the caveman is able to see where minerals are now and pinpoint them for future scientists.
I’ve learned a lot from Alley Oop.

  3. There are 487 references to evolutionary biology on CDC.gov. Pope Benedict XVI has said that the conflict between creationists and evolution is an “absurdity” and that belief in God is consistent with belief in evolution. There needs to be a little LESS religious tolerance on the part of some people of faith in the US. Not every belief is a religious belief and most of what evangelicals espouse is a political bludgeon designed to smash critical thought and has nothing to do with the teachings of their faith. Studies have show that European agnostics know more about the bible than US evangelicals.
Being unabashedly pro-science should be a core part of the Democratic political platform. There is zero conflict in promoting religious freedom and telling people who believe the world is flat and dinosaurs lived side by side with humans 3000 years ago that they are absolutely full of crap.

  4. I’m Hindu. What about my religion, which sees no conflict between God and evolution, and its freedom? No one said One Nation Under Christian God.
