Oh, Jesus, This Too?

Obama had to go and talk last night about howhe already had a lot of shit on his plate:

WASHINGTON –Justice David Souter is planning to retire after more than 19 years on theSupreme Court, givingPresident Barack Obama his first chance to fill a vacancy on the high court.

White House has been told that Souter will retire in June, when the
court finishes its work for the summer, a source familiar with his
plans said Thursday night. He almost certainly would remain on the
bench until a successor is confirmed.

The source spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak for Souter.

Souter had no comment Thursday night, aSupreme Court spokeswoman said.

retirement is unlikely to alter the ideological balance on the closely
divided court because Obama is certain to replace the liberal-leaning
justice with someone with similar views.

  1. I once took a class from Stanley Kutler (he of the Watergate tapes fame) that had as its central thesis that SCt justices seldom ruled the way that you expected them to do—Exhibit A being Earl Warren appointed as a reliable conservative. I think the vetting has gotten better, especially amongs the fascist wing of the GOP, with Roberts, Scalito and Thomas being reliable madmen intent on eviscerating human rights. I don’t know if Obama can find someone who’s reliably liberal (or if he’s even interested in that—he may see this as a chance to reach out to the anti-abortion folks and appoint Rick Warren or something).
