Maine becomes fifth state to allow gay marriage

UPDATED: New Hampshire’s Legislature also passed a gay marriage bill today, which now goes to Gov. John Lynch for final approval.

“I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage.” 

Sosaid Governor John Baldacci today, after signing the gay marriage bill passed a few hours before by the Maine Legislature. The state senate voted 21-13 in favor of the measure and the House of Representatives approved it 89-57 on Tuesday.
