I’ll say this for George Bush: you’d never have caught him
frantically negotiating against himself to take the meat out of a
signature legislative initiative just because his approval ratings had
a bad summer. Can you imagine Bush and Karl Rove allowing themselves to
be paraded through Washington on a leash by some dimwit Republican
Senator of a state with six people in it the way the Obama White House
this summer is allowing Max Baucus (favorite son of the mighty state of
Montana) to frog-march them to a one-term presidency?

  1. Every time this happens, Pelosi and the progressive leaders in the House double down. It’s happening again this morning. This is more of the six-dimensional chess we keep hearing about.

  2. Here’s what I don’t get. If it is so blindingly obvious to us sitting out here that there is no pleasing Republicans, there will never be any pleasing Republicans, they are determined to be a minority party for the rest of their lives and vote No on everything, if that’s so clear to all of us, what on earth is opaque to the Washington crowd? I get that Chris Matthews is your constituency, like that’s all it is entirely, but COME THE FUCK ON, even Chris Matthews is like, “Death panels? Seriously? That’s what we’re hung up on?”
    Fox News: Apparently the only thing Democrats will listen to anymore.

  3. Once again, today’s Tom Tommorrow cartoon in Salon sums it up pretty well.
    Why do Dems buckle this way? Why can’t Dems call bullshit? Why don’t they have a backbone? We need to stand up to the schoolyard bully and kick his ass all over the playground.

  4. I think, A, the problem is that *we’re out here*. It’s one thing to look at this from the perspective of the outfield, but down on the playing field, they’re not gonna slide in spikes-first because they actually like each other.
    So much of getting shit done for your constituents depends on maintaining relationships with the other side. The problem is, the Republicans decided a long time ago that they don’t give a shit about that stuff. It’s all part of the playing-to-the-base strategy (dumbass as it may be).
    Democrats are still fighting the last war, the one where they could only win by negotiating, in a time when gerrymandering hadn’t rendered most seats locks for one side or the other. We’ve moved on to total war, the Blitz and firebombing Dresden, because no matter what you say or do, your base will still vote for you.

  5. It seams to me it makes sense to step back and look at the issues. I get that Republicans are a party of no and are doing this just to score crap points. But I also see Congress trying to Rahm through massive legislation about a tremondously important issue to every American in only 3 months. I am not sold on the notion that we have the best possible solution when there isn’t even a bill yet. Frankly I would rathe see Obama lose a little face and have a right bill passed. To me, that is why the Blue Dogs and moderates are not falling in line and I am fine with that, even if the Republicans score points. To me this is too important of an issue.

  7. No, this could be solved with a few clear unambiguous statements.
    “Medicare for everybody, now.” That’s what we need.
    That’s not, so far, what I’m hearing the President advocate, and that is disappointing.
    Where’s LBJ when we need him?
