(Format stole fromhere.)

Okay, here’s what’s actually going on:

Senators Chris Dodd (D-CT), Patrick Leahy (D-VT), Russ Feingold (D-WI),
and Jeff Merkley (D-OR) announced today that they will introduce the
Retroactive Immunity Repeal Act, which eliminates retroactive immunity
for telecommunications companies that allegedly participated in
President Bush’s warrantless wiretapping program.

“I believe we best defend America when we also defend its founding
principles,” said Dodd. “We make our nation safer when we eliminate the
false choice between liberty and security. But by granting retroactive
immunity to the telecommunications companies who may have participated
in warrantless wiretapping of American citizens, the Congress violated
the protection of our citizen’s privacy and due process right and we
must not allow that to stand.”

Feingold and Dodd are both up for re-election. Give them turkee if you can in the next few months because they will need it.

  1. First of all, I couldn’t agree more that the retro immunity granted the telecoms is a bunch of @#$%. Frankly, in light of the next paragraph, I wonder if the intent wasn’t to cover up something else.
The telecoms were already in the clear in that if it ever went to trial, all they had to do was to show that the prez had asked them to, invoke 9/11, the Attorney General ordered them to (and said he would imprison them if they said anything) and plead that they were trying to be good citizens in a bad time. The worst outcome would be them found liable for one dollar or less.
But having said that, I wonder about the ability to take it back. My heart desperately wants it to be taken back but I wonder if they can legally do anything beyond stopping it from this date forward.

  2. Heh. I was saying to Mr. L just this morning that I was going to have to send some money to The Dodd and Mr. Feingold, because my senators are WORTHLESS SUCKING WASTES OF OXYGEN so I had adopted me some GOOD GUYS.
The Dodd was the first politician I ever sent money too. I don’t regret it.
Maple is right – I hope they can do this, and good on them for not being afraid of “Oh look, you lurve terrorists TRAITOR TRAITOR TRAITOR” screams that you KNOW are coming.
