We’re Number Five! We’re Number Five!

At least Chicago’s got something to be proud of:

Here are the top twenty strangest cities according to Tableseed.com’s rankings:

1) New York City, NY
2) Lincoln, NE
3) Madison, WI
4) Philadelphia, PA
5) Chicago, IL
6) Cinncinnati, OH
7) Boston, MA
8) Detroit, MI
9) Dallas, TX
10) Pittsburgh, PA

Seriously, between Rollerblading Rabbit Dude (my ‘hood’s resident strangeoid) and the fact that every time I’ve taken some out-of-towner friend on the L there’s like a kid in a panda costume singing for no reason anyone around him can discern, this city is pretty fucking strange.

I do have to ask, though, since it’s the only place in the top five I’ve never been: What is going on in Lincoln, Nebraska?

A.

  1. Yeah, Madison (aka Mad-city) I can understand. Definitely top-3 material.
And NYC has enough of everything that they’ve got more weird than everyone else, okay.
But where’s LA? It’s got Tar Pits! Cucamonga!
Lincoln? Cincy? Are they kidding? Sheesh! Something is seriously wrong here.

  2. I think it’s a matter of reference. There’s so much strange in LA that it’s actually normal. So nobody notices.

  3. When I lived in Chicago many years ago, there was a guy who rode the Clark street bus with a mop and full pail of water – and he talked to the mop.

  4. Did Dallas make it because of their resident ‘strangeoid’ ol’ Shrubbie?

  5. What’s with Lincoln? Huskers dude, really… Have you ever seen them on a Saturday in the fall?

  6. I can’t take a list seriously that doesn’t list New Orleans among the 10 strangest cities in the world let alone the country.

  7. We’re Number One! We’re Number One!
But I agree with racymind and Adrastos … Lincoln, NE? And no NOLA?

  8. The “KEEP PORTLAND WEIRD!” people are going to be plenty upset.
    Same for Austin.

  9. I was gonna say, where’s Portland, OR on that list? Any city that contains my friend Rustin immediately vaults to the head of the weirdness list.

  10. Well, for New Orleans ‘weird’ is perfectly normal for Nola. Therefore, it doesn’t stand out. Afterall, the day before Halloween, I was all zombie’d up, rode the streetcar from Lisa’s street w/mostly locals to a point and the locals just smiled pleasantly and behaved normally. The tourists as they shoved on board gave me odd looks and “why are you dressed like that???”
Heck, when I entered Buffa’s like that, the bartender recognized me despite the flaking faux flesh and acted like nothing was out of the norm and got my usual going. I love that city!!! 🙂

  11. i’ve lived in or around chicago most of my life. about 10 years ago, i used to see a guy jogging on the lakefront bike path in full samuri armor – including swords.

  12. Obviously whoever did this ranking has never been in Salt Lake City. I have been in all but three of the cities in the US that had over 100,000 population in 2004, but there is nothing that will ever out weird Salt Lake City. I’d rather be in a cemetery at night in New Orleans next to Marie Laveau’s tomb than ever visit that ghoul hole again.
