Fandom Wank: Tea Party Edition

I’ve written before aboutthe similarity of behavior on the fandom Internet and the political Internet. I can think of no better demonstration than this e-mail from the organizers of this Tea Party convention train-wreck. It’s classic. This has it all:

Judson and I have stayed silent in the face of intense media scrutiny
and attacks by former members. As a wife and a mother, I have stood by
my husband and family and stayed strong in the face of many baseless
accusations and criticism.

No one is as oppressed as I am! No one!

We will stay silent no longer.

Your forbearance up until now has been heroic. Have you considered nominating yourself for a Nobel?

American Liberty Alliance – Eric Odom’s American Liberty Alliance is a for profit company that takes donations.

Or as we in the reality-based community call them, “payments.”

Shortly after agreeing to this exchange, Eric emailed Judson and me
privately saying he was supportive of us and this convention and did
not want to pull out, because he thinks this convention is going to be
a huge success; however, some his “influential supporters” were not
happy about ALA’s participation in the convention and asked Eric to
withdraw.

Right. It wasn’t his fault. Not like he owns the company or anything. He totes loves us!

Several former members were unanimously banned from our site for
reasons running the gamut from antagonism to passing on confidential
information.

BANHAMMER 4000!

Congressmen Bachmann and Blackburn – Both Congresswomen have large
targets on their backs and are rightfully concerned about backlash they
will receive from the left-leaning Democrat controlled House Ethics
Committee.

Here’s a tip: When your party’s too crazy for MICHELLE BACHMANN, it’s time to take the lampshade off your head.

We have made the best of a tight budget and scaled back the price of
attending this convention as much as we could without putting TPN into
bankruptcy. The convention is sold out and we have a waiting list of
over five hundred people.

THE LURKERS SUPPORT US IN E-MAIL!!11!

For all of you who will be attending, we look forward to meeting you
this upcoming week and we thank everyone for the support and patriotism
in this fight against liberalism.

For serious, Star Wars fans who seriously think they are part of the Rebel Alliance are not this overwrought about their glorious purpose.

  1. Montag, I don’t think it’s that we’re weird so much as that we’re a nation of total drama queens. Everything’s a conspiracy, everybody’s out to get us, all the time.
Weird I can handle. Persecution complex? Not so much.

  2. A convention with a waiting list???? wtf. I looked at their web site and they have sold out the convention only tickets ($349 and 9.71 fee) and have banquet-only tickets ($349 and 9.71 fee) and are still taking names (that wait list) for the convention and banquet ($5.49 and 9.95 fee). I’ve gone to a number of science fiction fandom conventions and never had a separate fee. And only World cons are as expensive as this thing is. And they think people will still go to Nashville and wait around to be told “we have room for you to attend the meetings”. And that banquet price screams profit. Well, if the teabaggers want to be exploited, guess you can’t stop them.

  3. Don’t forget, the Teabaggers BELIEVE in exploitation-for-profit; they support the health insurance companies, obviously they’ll happily support their own exploitation by a for-profit Teabag conference?

  4. What was it? Nobody ever went broke underestimating gullibility among the ignorant, and or the hopelessly stupid?

    True dat.
