I’ve written before aboutthe similarity of behavior on the fandom Internet and the political Internet. I can think of no better demonstration than this e-mail from the organizers of this Tea Party convention train-wreck. It’s classic.This has it all:

not want to pull out, because he thinks this convention is going to be
a huge success; however, some his “influential supporters” were not
happy about ALA’s participation in the convention and asked Eric to
withdraw.
Right. It wasn’t his fault. Not like he owns the company or anything. He totes loves us!
Several former members were unanimously banned from our site for
reasons running the gamut from antagonism to passing on confidential
information.

Congressmen Bachmann and Blackburn – Both Congresswomen have large
targets on their backs and are rightfully concerned about backlash they
will receive from the left-leaning Democrat controlled House Ethics
Committee.

We have made the best of a tight budget and scaled back the price of
attending this convention as much as we could without putting TPN into
bankruptcy. The convention is sold out and we have a waiting list of
over five hundred people.

A convention with a waiting list???? wtf. I looked at their web site and they have sold out the convention only tickets ($349 and 9.71 fee) and have banquet-only tickets ($349 and 9.71 fee) and are still taking names (that wait list) for the convention and banquet ($5.49 and 9.95 fee). I’ve gone to a number of science fiction fandom conventions and never had a separate fee. And only World cons are as expensive as this thing is. And they think people will still go to Nashville and wait around to be told “we have room for you to attend the meetings”. And that banquet price screams profit. Well, if the teabaggers want to be exploited, guess you can’t stop them.
Don’t forget, the Teabaggers BELIEVE in exploitation-for-profit; they support the health insurance companies, obviously they’ll happily support their own exploitation by a for-profit Teabag conference?
What was it? Nobody ever went broke underestimating gullibility among the ignorant, and or the hopelessly stupid?
