I interviewed Lyle Lovett a couple of times… this song was written when he was smitten with Julia Roberts, and his nickname for her was Fiona.
Thought she was a jerk for dumping him.
One reason Road To Ensenada is such a great album is that there are so many bittersweet breakup songs on it. “I don’t love you any less but I can’t love you any more” is one of the best lines Lyle has ever written.
