Maes’ campaign has reimbursed family $71,658

Republican gubernatorial candidate Dan Maes’ second-biggest campaign expense is . . . Dan Maes and his family.

The Evergreen businessman, who sold his credit-reporting company last year and has been running for office full time since March 2009, has been reimbursed $71,658 from his campaign. His daughter Jordan, his executive aide, has been paid $14,101 for work and some expenses, according to a Denver Post analysis.

The total is nearly 30 percent of the $304,000 Maes has raised. His top expense is advertising, which totals $113,338.

The amount of Dan Maes’ expenses, which include mileage, travel, phone, food and drinks for fundraisers, “misc expenses,” subscriptions, parking and trips to Wal-Mart, may be unprecedented, said the Colorado secretary of state’s office.

Additionally, some of the expenses were months out of date when reimbursement was requested. For instance, on his May 2010 report, he listed a reimbursement for $3,400 spent on Feb. 19, 2010. The money was for: $495 for a facility rental eight months earlier, in June 2009; $88.45 for thank-you cards; 2009 mileage with no miles listed; $158 for signs from 2009; and $325.60 in postage.

Maes said the campaign doesn’t have a credit card because it’s a “cash and carry” operation. Although he said he could not comment on specific reimbursements, he said generally most of the money was for mileage.

“Every once in a while we might have left a wallet home and had to use a personal check or cash,” Maes said.

Maes paid a record $17,500 fine in August for campaign-finance violations, which included improperly recording mileage costs.

In September, Maes was reimbursed $6,879 for mileage incurred by himself, his wife and his daughter.

Maes raised $22,000 from Sept. 30 to Oct. 13, bringing his total to $304,000. His second-largest campaign expense is advertising ($83,919) followed by consulting fees ($42,903), which include $10,000 in legal fees stemming from the campaign-finance violations. He has also spent $4,070 on food, $3,903 on travel and $15,396 on “unknown” and “miscellaneous” expenses.

American Constitution Party candidate Tom Tancredo raked in $220,000 during that same period, bringing his total to $682,000. He has reimbursed himself $3,822 for advertising, office equipment and travel. His top expenses overall: $440,849 on advertising, $79,656 on fundraising and $32,349 on consultants.

Democrat John Hickenlooper raised $387,000 from Sept. 30 to Oct. 13, bringing his total for the campaign to $3.7 million. He has not been reimbursed by his campaign for any expenses. His top three expense categories are $1.7 million in advertising, $843,959 for consultants and employees, and $419,825 in fundraising costs.

That sounds suspiciously unlike a “grassroots movement” to me. These bozos hate, hate, HATE the GOP establishment and want to supplant it with the Amateur Hour rejects that are its constituency, even if the said failures could fuck up a two-car funeral.

This is a bit like wanting to get all the corrupt surgeons out of the hospital and replace them with plumbers and Home Depot managers. These idiots think this is some kind of on-the-job training program.

You just described why the whole teabagger thing can’t work. They think that if they get their guys elected that they can wave their magic wand around andmake people be like them. Doesn’t work that way.

I was sitting in my car one night waiting for a friend of mine to get home. His dad was a preacher, and didn’t approve of Alex’s hanging around with musicians, so I was waiting at the corner vacant lot. Behind me was a house with a semi parked in front of it, maybe three car-lengths behind my car.

I heard a “Hey – get the fuck out of here” through my rolled-up car window. I looked to my left and there was a man standing there with a handgun there telling me I’d better get away from his truck (as if I were going to load the contents of his semi into my Plymouth Arrow).

I rolled down the window and allowed as how I was going to do no such thing.

This wasn’t in his script. He had grown up watching TV and learning that having a gun = magic wand, where you can make people do whatever you say. Frankly, a gun can’t doanything but shoot, and If you don’t know what you’re doing, can’t even hit what you’re aiming at.

He made another valiant effort to get his movie going again: “Do you see what I have here”?

I replied: “Looks like a Colt Police Positive to me”, and turned to face forward again.

He seemed to be having trouble coming up with a response to that, so I added: “Look – either pull the trigger and go to jail, or put that silly thing away.”

He grumped off to his house, and I picked up my friend about 15 minutes later, and he was startled when I told him what went down. I explained: “It’s the gun you DON’T see that kills you. If they’re waving it around, it’s because they don’t have what it takes to pull the trigger.”

A Republican ad that shows a couple of regular-looking guys commiserating in a diner aboutWest Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin (D) turns out to have been shot with actors, from a script, in Philadelphia.

But not just any actors: “We are going for a ‘Hicky’ Blue Collar look,” read the casting call for the ad, being aired by the National Republican Senatorial Committee. “These characters are from West Virginia so think coal miner/trucker looks.”

“Clothing Suggestions” included jeans, work boots, flannel shirt, denim shirt, “Dickie’s type jacket with t-shirt underneath,” down-filled vest, “John Deer [sic] hats (not brand new, preferably beat up),” “trucker hats (not brand new, preferably beat up).”

TheNRSC began airing the ad this week in the West Virginia Senate race, in which Manchin is facing a sudden scare from Republican businessman John Raese (pronounced “racy”) in the contest to replace the late Sen. Robert Byrd.

I bopped over to FR and searched on “Hicky”.

Nothing.

I did a search for “casting”

Nada.

Rich Iott, the Tea Party-supported GOP nominee for Congress in Ohio’s 9th District, is part of a group that likes to don German Waffen SS uniforms and participate Nazi re-enactments, Atlantic journalist Josh Green revealed on Real Time with Bill Maher.

The group, called Wiking, acts out exploits from the 5th SS Panzer Division Wiking, an actual Nazi division, which fought on the Eastern Front during World War II .

Iott, who confirms his involvement with the group, denies any belief in the principles of Nazism.

“It’s purely historical interest in World War II,” he told the Atlantic.

Iott can’t remember when he joined the group, although his name appears on a group roster from 2003. He says he participated in the group with his son “as a father-son bonding thing.”

While Iott neglects to address Jewish voters he might have offended, he does address veterans in an e-mail to the Atlantic: “Never, in any of my reenacting of military history, have I meant any disrespect to anyone who served in our military or anyone who has been affected by the tragedy of war. In fact, I have immense respect for veterans who served our country valiantly, and my respect of the military and our veterans is one of the reasons I have actively studied military history throughout my life.”

Incidentally, there is no longer any mention of Iott — also a member of the NRCC’s Young Guns Program — on the Wiking website and all photographs of the Congressional candidate have been removed
