Bye Bye Baby

That was the home run call of the late SF Giants announcer Russ Hodges. I remember Russ and his partner Lon Simmons when I was a kid. I’ve been saying it a lot this post-season as the No Star (except for Tim Lincecum and young Buster Posey) Giants have advanced. Past Giants teams *have* been known for their superstars: Mays, Cepeda, Marichal, Perry, Kent, Jack and Will Clark, Bobby and Barry Bonds BUT they haven’t won the World Series since 1954. It’s looking good right now though.

I’m posting this as a sort of hoodoo on the Texas Rangers. Of course, they may have jinxed themselves by having Poppy and Dubya sit behind home plate in Nolan Ryan’s box.

Anyhoo, here’s that famous home run call in its incarnation as a fight song:

  1. Will the Thrill. Me and a buddy from Jesuit/LSU had a few beers with Clark and his gang at the old Parkway many years ago.
A dick. But he could knock the shit outta the ball.

  2. I should have asked this in your previous Giants post, but was wondering if you have any stories to tell about watching games at Candlestick Park, i.e., do you have a Croix de Candlestick pin or did you ever see a pitcher get blown off the mound by a gust of wind?
I guess both McCovey and Mays lost a few home runs playing there.
Years ago, I read somewhere that building it a a football field or so from the actual location would have mitigated a lot of the weather issues…
