Armistice Day

Remembering:

Millions across the globe on Thursday paid their respects to those who sacrificed their lives during the First World War.

In Paris, French President Nicolas Sarkozy and several senior government and military officials gathered to remember the fallen.

More than 1.3 million French troops died during the conflict, the largest losses for an individual country with the Allied forces.

Andwe lost our fucking minds when they refused to sign on to our Great Iraqi Adventure, because they clearly were insufficiently brave.

  1. Proportional to population, that would be like 13 million Americans being killed in a war on our own soil. Something which might change the mindset of even the stupidest chickenhawk.
You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you’ll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

  2. You need to remember they also told us Vietnam would be a disaster for us. They were right about that, too.
    No wonder we hate ’em…

  3. I spent the fall of 2002 and the spring of 2003 sending links to the website of the Ossuaire at Verdun to asshats whose knowledge of France was no deeper than my cats’ knowledge of English.
Fat lot of good it did — but I felt better.
