On the First Sunday of Lent every year, we read in the Gospel of the devil tempting Our Lord. First he tries to tempt Him to gluttony, and Our Lord resists. Of course, Our Lord, because He is God, cannot be inclined to sin. But the devil, not knowing that, first tries to tempt Him to gluttony, and then to pride and power and materialism. He says to Our Lord, “Why don’t you throw yourself off this high elevation? God will save you.” Our Lord refuses. Then the devil pulls out his trump card. He shows Our Lord all the glory of the world and says, “I will give all this to you, if you will just bow down and worship me.” Of course, Our Lord refuses again. What the devil was saying here, in a sense, was “I’ll give you magic to do something that is not morally right, but it’s something you would enjoy.”
It should be evident to us, my dear parishioners, that the devil is after each one of us, tempting us in similar manner to sin and to pride. These temptations take different forms, so we must be on our guard. The devil is trying to tempt us away from serving God, from obeying God’s commandments. He is so crafty, so subtle, that often you don’t even know, unless you are very careful, how he is insinuating himself.
I believe it my duty to talk to you today about a series of books and its accompanying movie because I believe that they contain an insinuation of pride and ungodliness. I think you know what I am talking about: the Harry Potter series. I will speak both about the books and the movie, because if one reads the books, he will want to see the movie, and vice versa. I believe there are some real problems here, real spiritual danger — possibly grave spiritual danger. I will explain why. Believe me, I have refrained from saying anything about this for a long time. When the books first came out, I began to gather information on them. I wanted to analyze them to see whether or not they were good for children to be reading, and to write an article forThe Reign of Mary. I haven’t said anything up to this time because I wanted to study the matter, rather than say yes or no before I knew what I was talking about.
Let me also preface this explanation by saying that I speak now from the consciousness that one day I will have to answer to God for how I accomplished my duty to instruct you in matters of faith and morals. I certainly believe that there are matters of faith and morals involved in this particular matter.
The first problem I would like to point out are the words that are so casually used in the books and in the movie, words that are so casually used that children may start using them — yet these words are matter of mortal sin. Specifically, I am referring to such words as: sorcery, witchcraft, casting spells, communicating with the dead (necromancy). The Catholic Church very clearly tells us that these are mortal sins, and they must not be presented as though they are something permissible to try. I believe it is the devil trying to insinuate himself through the medium of human beings, trying to draw us away from Christ. These are not your usual Grimm’s Fairy Tales. Remember that children do not have the same critical ability that adults have. They read fantasy much differently than we do: they read it in a believing way.

You’re braver than me, using that name for The-Kenyan-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. I usually just refer to him as the “former junior US Senator from Illinois”. I try to avoid saying any of his last names, whether Soetoro or the one he used in taking the Oath of Office to assume power over our country, and I have never used the title “president” for a community organizer who is even less deserving of the office than Carter, Nixon, or James Buchanan.

After setting a TLC ratings record last week, Sarah Palin’s reality show plummeted for its second episode.
Sarah Palin’s Alaska fell 40% on Sunday night to 3 million viewers.
Not many were in the key adult demo either. Only 885,000 viewers were ages 18-49, dropping 44% from last week.
In fact, the median age of the show is 57 — that’s 15 years older than TLC’s average.
TLC expected a ratings drop coming off the high-flying premiere; executives realized some of their numbers were driven by sheer curiosity rather than eagerness to see an Alaska-based travelogue reality show. Competition from Sunday Night Football and the American Music Awards may have impacted the numbers as well.
“We are very happy with the ongoing strength of Sarah Palin’s Alaska, and it continues to drive big ratings gains for TLC,” said a network spokesperson, who noted Conan had a similar drop.
Tonight, Bristol Palin will be on the Dancing With the Stars finale and there should be no shortage of viewers there given the controversy surrounding her improbable continued
Three million viewers is still impressive for a cable show.

Drama is good for ratings? Who knew!Jersey Shore was a hit from the very start, but ratings for season 2 continue to hit record highs.
However those who thought that the show would gain audience as it progressed appear to have been mistaken.
IMO, too much reality show and not enough Alaska.

The “Just For The Halibut” 2nd show we had to go to Comcast’s “On Demand” feature to pull it up manually last night. These filth will do everything and anything, the more despicable, the better they like it.
I used to think that “Liberal/Progrssive” was a mental disorder. I know now that it is a sub-species, a much lower, less evolved life form compared to a conservative. Immature, venal, craven reprobatesall.

This is not news. Every show has a huge audience and then gets back to reality. She will do her 8 or 10 episodes and be done with it as planned. Nothing horrible about this at all.Those 5 million voters will be voters that she needs for President, plus the 2 million Facebook folks, the million of us FREEPERS, the 2.7 million folks that purchased her first book. She is getting very close to the 51 percent she needs to win this election in 2012. Her new book comes out soon and if she gets another 2.7 million folks to buy the book that even adds to her total votes necessary to win the election. And then there is Dancing with the Stars who has 19 million folks watching that show so that doubles her votes just through that show. She has the election in the bag!!!!!
Even for a Palin worshiper that is some weird math you have going there.
This has nothing to do with Palin winning or not winning…but did it ever dawn on you that the people that watch her on TV, might also be the same folks that are FB friends or buy the book, i.e. you might have just counted the same person 3 times. Obama won with 65 million votes, btw.

I agree … it’s silly to the point it’s unwatchable for anyone but the staunchest Palin koolaiders.. I had to change channels half way through the halibut part.. lets drive a hundred miles on a bus ride to watch Bristol try to hit a fish in the head with a bat… let’s see if Bristol can hit a clay pidgeon after the 20th pull…with Sarah non stop talking the whole time.
I’d watch it if it was called Todd Palin’s Alaska and it was him and his buddies really fishing(not that fake fishing while the bears ran around), snow mobiling, flying and hunting in beautiful Alaska ala American Sportsman

Part way through the show, even though I had fast forwarded through the reality show fluff, I found myself shouting, “HIRE A DAMN NARRATOR!!!!”
My wife yelled at me for using the “d” word in front of my daughter. Shortly after that, she said to me under her breath, “Yea, she’s getting on my nerves, too.”

The number of viewers is not important. The age of the viewers is important and people over the age of 52 are not desirable viewers.

The rock climbing segment was pitiful. It showed her to not have a clue.
Ditto the skeet shooting. There was not one good hit in the whole segment. I hoped Todd would smoke one but the best he could was wing them too. A good hit makes dust. There were no good hits
Then there is the borrowed RV. It seems they could have sprung for a rental with no plastic wrap on the floor.
I’m watching to see Alaska…

A conservative Maryland physician elected to Congress on an anti-Obamacare platform surprised fellow freshmen at a Monday orientation session by demanding to know why his government-subsidized health care plan takes a month to kick in.
Republican Andy Harris, an anesthesiologist who defeated freshman Democrat Frank Kratovil on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, reacted incredulously when informed that federal law mandated that his government-subsidized health care policy would take effect on Feb. 1 – 28 days after his Jan. 3rd swearing-in.
“He stood up and asked the two ladies who were answering questions why it had to take so long, what he would do without 28 days of health care,” said a congressional staffer who saw the exchange. The benefits session, held behind closed doors, drew about 250 freshman members, staffers and family members to the Capitol Visitors Center auditorium late Monday morning,”.
“Harris then asked if he could purchase insurance from the government to cover the gap,” added the aide, who was struck by the similarity to Harris’s request and the public option he denounced as a gateway to socialized medicine.
Harris, a Maryland state senator who works at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore and several hospitals on the Eastern Shore, also told the audience, “This is the only employer I’ve ever worked for where you don’t get coverage the first day you are employed,” his spokeswoman Anna Nix told POLITICO.
