It’s football season so the nation’s politicians are using gridiron analogies to describe what’s happening in the lame duck session of Congress. My favorite thus far isAl Franken’s description of the Obama/GOP tax deal:
Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) voted to end debate on the Bush tax cut compromise yesterday, but he’s not happy about it. In a strongly-worded statement sent to his supporters today, Franken pokes at President Obama for negotiating the deal, which he called “bad policy.”
“A lot of people are unhappy that the President punted on first down, and I’m one of them,” Franken wrote in the message to supporters. “Extending the Bush tax breaks for the super-wealthy will explode our deficit over the next two years without doing anything to help our economy.”
To extend the kicking analogy, not only has the President punted but it’s a bad kick. It’s off the side of his foot and gives the GOP excellent field position. If you’re going to punt, at least try and pin the opposition inside the 10 yard line. The only cheers our punter got was from the Broderites in the punditocracy. We should have sent out monster Saints punter Thomas Morstead. He’d have kicked the ball up Chinless Mitch’s ass…
What does all this mean? Obama not only made a bad deal, he looked weak doing so as did Congressional Dems. Why on earth didn’t they vote on taxes before the election? They lacked the “noive” just like the Cowardly Lion before he got his medal and showed his mettle.
