I remember that election. Poor old Adlai didn’t have a hope. Ike was everything nice and calm — required no attention. Though later there was that scandal with Sherman Adams and the vicuna coat. First tiem I’d ever heard of vicuna and since then I’ve been to Peru and have a lovely alpaca cape. (Vicuna still being way beyond my means.)
I was 8 years old during that campaign, and danged if that sign don’t look vaguely familiar!
Maybe that’s when my Inner 12-Year-Old was first stirring, as I remember 3rd grade classmates named Richard never letting anyone nickname them “Dick”, so even schoolkids were already aware of the double entendre — campaign P.R. staff, not so much!
