“The best is yet to come”

Thus spake President Obama in his soaring, Sorensenesque victory speech. It was reminiscent of the 2004 keynote speech that brought him to national attention as well as the best one by far of the 2012 re-election campaign.

Last night’s Crack Van was the best ever. It started in the afternoon with what Athenae called “almost an editor’s meeting” with her, Scout and me and ended up with around 50 vanners. I felt like a virtual camp counselor at times in calming some folks down: the traumas of close losses in 2000 and 2004 still linger with many. Me, I’m still mildly traumatized by the blow-outs in 1980 and 1984. I’m not sure which is worse but why should we play duelling traumas on the day after?

In the end, this one turned out pretty darn well with Tammy Baldwin, Elizabeth Warren and Tim Kaine winning their Senate races and the rape boys, Mourdock and Akin losing theirs. The latter gave a textbook example of how *not* to concede: Akin is a prick to the end.

I admit to hooting Willard but his IT people inserted a graciousness chip or something. It did sound like a victory speech but at least he didn’t do this:

Rockefeller-bird

I considered doing a humble brag about my prognostications but decided simply to brag. I’ve thought all year that Obama would win and that we’d never elect a robot President even after the debacle in Denver. Also, if the lead in Florida holds, I will have nailed my 332-206 electoral vote prediction. End of unhumble brag.

I’ll leave the freak out on the right to the interpid Tommy T but it’s coming. I just don’t wanna deal with it because I am mildly hungover after consuming more than my share of Jamesons last night. I suspect, however, that it will involve variations on this theme: “free weed for married gay abortionists.”

I’ll let someone who knew the agony of defeat and the thrill of victory as both a Democrat and Republican have the last word:

  1. Great post. Hope you get your prediction! Our Nate.
Van was epic…immensely enjoyed your company…as well as all FDers

  2. Alas, I ran out of rye in the last Crack Van and never got around to replenishing, so I am sober as a judge this morning. Sucks.

  3. Who is that in the photo flippin’ the bird? Looks familiar but I can’t place him (though I’m old enough:)
