Weekend Question Thread

Best motivational song for when you don’t want to do anything but sit on the couch and watch Russell Crowe movies for like nine hours, which would be me today?

I’ve been yelling along with this in the car a lot lately:

  1. If it’s a song to get me off the couch and doing chores/tasks…I’ve got a couple of Allman Brothers albums that work well. Also lately, Wilco’s Yankee Hotel Foxtrot was what the iPod ran while I cut the grass and edged.

  2. if it’s motion that’s needed, and for me, that’s sometimes the key element, just moving, my first go to is always the New Pornos. Because they are big stupid geniuses. Sing me Spanish Techno, because THAT CHORUS, and because I love that Carl’s lisp will not be hidden. The Bleeding Heart Show. because THAT CHORUS. Crash Years. Because the drums, and the cello and the whistling AND THE DRUMS.

    (great video, just joy).
You want newer, younger? The Alabama Shakes. Because: Everything.

  3. The song that comes to mind right now is one that I only came to know by attending a couple Obama rallies this fall. I heard it at both, and after the second I had to find out what it was. It sounded like maybe Curtis Mayfield, circa 1970 or so, but turns out to be a guy named Raphael Saadiq from just a couple years ago.
    “Keep Marching”.

(And BTW, do we not have the hippest President ever?)

  4. I liked this song from the first time I heard it. And although I’m still not sure what it’s “about,” I heard it on the way to see “Lincoln” Saturday night and somehow it felt appropriate.
(Their single before this one, though, sucked so badly that my 14yo daughter heard it on the car radio and said, “The band is called Fun, but, geez, they don’t sound like it.”)
