Today on Tommy T’s Obsession with the Freeperati – The Bundy Bunch edition

Well, so much for my “no post this week” plans.

They do this to me EVERY TIME!!

OK – let’s get on with it. I was watching Freeperville Thursday morning, waiting for the shit that had already hit the fan everywhere else in the word to finally bob to the surface in Jim (I earned my goverment hoverround) Rob’s sandbox.

When it did, it was almost with a sigh, and a deceptively complimentary headline:

A Defiant Rancher Savors the Audience That Rallied to His Side

BUNKERVILLE, Nev. — Cliven Bundy stood by the Virgin River up the road from the armed checkpoint at the driveway of his ranch, signing autographs and posing for pictures. For 55 minutes, Mr. Bundy held forth to a clutch of supporters about his views on the troubled state of America — the overreaching federal government, the harassment of Western ranchers, the societal upheaval caused by abortion, even musing about whether slavery was so bad.

** snip **

“I want to tell you one more thing I know about the Negro,” he said. Mr. Bundy recalled driving past a public-housing project in North Las Vegas, “and in front of that government house the door was usually open and the older people and the kids — and there is always at least a half a dozen people sitting on the porch — they didn’t have nothing to do. They didn’t have nothing for their kids to do. They didn’t have nothing for their young girls to do.

“And because they were basically on government subsidy, so now what do they do?” he asked. “They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton. And I’ve often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy? They didn’t get no more freedom. They got less freedom.”

Bundy is now being slammed by the left for being a racist.

When a man sticks a “kick me” sign on his own behind…

If he had a better grasp of the fact that black family life has disintegrated in direct correlation to the “War on Poverty”, he has a defensible position. Throwing out that “picking cotton” allusion is just stupid.

Actually, if these statements are accurate he will be slammed by 90% of America for pretty blatant racist remarks. Paul, Heller, etc, pretty much everyone is going to walk about from someone who talks like this.

I mean, come on now. You can’t stand around talking about how the negro should have learned to pick cotton. I mean, even the most hard headed amongst us should understand that you can’t ally yourself politically with a person who makes such remarks.

Conservatives really, really, need to pick their battles better. How so many of us get suckered into supporting cranks, completely unelectable candidates, scam artists like Herman Cain who run for office to fund a book tour, etc, etc, I will never understand.

And then – the second thread hits – entitled “GOP scrambles to condemn rancher’s remarks on race”.
And it’s on like Donkey Kong!
