“They’re coming out of college with huge debts and having to take low-wage jobs. [So they’re]trying to fight back,” said Bill O’Meara, president of the Newspaper Guild of New York, which represents a group of Kaplan tutors in New York City who unionized hoping to bargain higher pay.

Middle class jobs have lost ground just as millennials have entered the workforce. Some 58% of the jobs created during the recent economic recovery have been low-wage positions like retail and food prep workers, according to a 2012 report by the National Employment Law Project. These low-wage jobs had a median hourly wage of $13.83 or less.

Median household income has also dropped by more than $4,000 since 2000, according to the Census Bureau.

So wow, things suck. Take it away, wise men and women of the CNN commentariat!

I wonder how many of these millennials took an economics 101 class on the simple laws of supply and demand and applied their learnings to minimum wage jobs…

Oh wait. That wasn’t a required class before they got that liberal arts B.A. degree in underwater basket weaving…

You obliviously know little to nothing about wally world employment, if a minimum wage minority can be bothered to show up for even 10 of the scheduled 30 hours a week at Wal Mart, they will advance, but you know what?

Most of these protesters do not have the work ethic or the discipline to go to college or work their way up in a job. They have been taught by their parents/parent to milk the system like they did.

So true. That’s what my ex-wife was teaching my kids as well. She was teaching them how to lie and cheat the system. I have since turned that around and taught them values, education, and a work ethic.

In case we’re keeping track, we now have the Men’s Rights contingent heard from, as well as the charming don’t-call-me-a-racist referring to a person of color as “a minority” and blaming Gen X parents for not teaching their kids that life sucks which … have you ever met a member of my generation? We are just as skilled as any other at yelling YOU DON’T KNOW HOW BAD BAD REALLY IS PUNK, much to my shame.

And the story uses as its prime example a woman who has an associate’s degree and works two jobs, not some “underwater basketweaver”whatever the hell that is. I suppose if she was a factory worker she should have known all the factory jobs were outsourced, and if she was a baseball player she should have known how tough it is to land a job in that profession, and if she was a cop she should just expect to be shot, and so on and so on, forever and ever, amen.

Look, I get how hard it is to ignore the gnawing fear in your gut that the future is going to mess you up. I get how if you can make everybody else’s misfortune their fault you don’t have to worry that Virtuous Perfect You might be slammed into the wall when you’re not looking. I get that very human impulse to distance and shield oneself. It’s just that once upon a time we didn’t use it as the basis for economic policy.

Then we went and elected a bunch of assholes to Congress who decided to codify their jerkoff grandparents’ coping mechanisms into actual law, and we end up here, where working two jobs and studying isn’t enough to justify your existence.
