Weekend Question Thread

Kick’s first birthday (!!!!) is tomorrow, so we’re hosting some folks at our place and watching a baby mush cake into her face.

Are birthdays a big deal to you? After about age 10, my family kind of started to just go out to dinner instead of having cake and singing, but Mr. A’s family had  birthdays as a week of festivities, like Mardi Gras.

  1. The only birthday party I ever had was my third birthday. It also happened to be on the day Kennedy was assassinated, so no more birthdays for me. My mother was from Boston and grew up around the Kennedys. She didn’t feel it was appropriate to have a party on such a sorrowful occasion. To make matters worse, she died, you guessed it, on my birthday!

  2. birthdays were never a big deal in my family. but right after we started dating, i asked my now-wife what she wanted me to do for her birthday. she said, “ignore it.” so i figured her family was a lot like my, and i did.
    silly me.

  3. Not anymore…

I can understand celebrating a kid’s birthday, though. Let them have fun. So, in that spirit, Happy B’day, Kick!

  4. I WANT to have cool birthdays, but my birthday (which I share with Marshawn Lynch, apparently) is in late April, which is late midterms/early final projects time, so I haven’t been able to do anything for it since like middle school. The one year in there where I wasn’t a student or teaching was the year I was living 1000 miles from all of my friends so I didn’t do anything for that one either 🙁

  5. Most of us are now old enough that even a call on one’s birthday is seen as an insult, a dig rooted in one’s impending mortality. Doesn’t stop me from doing it, but that’s the way it is.

Granddaughter’s birthdays are different–at three, she’s just beginning to figure out that this birthday party stuff is a good thing.

  6. Nothing like a child’s first birthday, when (if they’re healthy) they can start eating dairy. It was on my daughter’s first birthday, when she first got to taste ice cream, that we discovered she had an eating disorder: two hands and only one mouth.
