I dislike criticizing other Democrats, but too many elected officials fail to grasp the gravity of the current situation. Calling Trump and Vance fascists was not just a campaign tactic, it’s the truth. That’s too much for some Congressional Democrats. It’s time for them to wake up and smell the coffee.
Stephen Lynch is a 13th term Congressman from Boston. He’s the bearded bloke at the podium in the featured image. Lynch was born and raised in South Boston, home to Whitey Bulger and resistance to school desegregation in the 1970’s. In 2025, Lynch is more in step with his district’s past than the House Democratic caucus. Lynch does, however, bring home the bacon, which matters less now that the GOP has the trifecta.
On the plus side, Lynch dislikes the Musk wilding and Trump policies in general.
Lynch, however, does not understand that the current political climate requires a change in tactics: Voting with MAGA Republicans on any issue is tantamount to appeasement. Shit is that bad, but Lynch is reluctant to face the facts. He is not alone in this.
Lynch faced heckling at the public appearance depicted in the featured image. He did not handle it well:
“Lynch, who’s represented a safely blue seat in Congress since 2001, was exhorted by rallygoers at a Friday protest to stand up more forcefully to Trump. But he demurred when one attendee asked him to “commit to not voting for any Republican legislation,” saying he had to consider the views of his entire district.
“I got 800,000 people that I represent, and I gotta figure out what’s in their best interest, not the best interest of, you know, Sally Blue from across the street,” said Lynch in a video published by MassLive. One attendee, however, interjected to say, “This is in the best interests of our country and our democracy,” which set Lynch off.
“I get to decide that. I get to decide that,” he responded with evident irritation. “I get to decide that. I’m elected. I get to decide that. You wanna decide that? You need to run for Congress, okay? I get to decide that.”
Does Lynch have any idea how Trumpy that sounded? It contains a whiff of the “only I can fix it” rhetoric of President Pennywise. Only the people can fix this.
I’m rarely in favor of primarying veteran Democratic lawmakers but there are exceptions to every rule. This could be one of them if Lynch declines to take a firmer stand against fascism.
I, too, am a member of the get shit done wing of the Democratic party BUT these are not ordinary times. Our democracy is under attack by the Kaiser of Chaos, Reich Chancellor Musk, and their underlings. After denying any involvement with Project 2025, Trump has given Elon Musk a free hand to implement it. It was just another lie. Anyone surprised?
Democratic politicians have to step up their response to the illegal and outrageous conduct by Apartheid Boy and his pimply proteges. It’s not time to waver or temporize, it’s time to oppose. Democrats prefer to say yes but it’s time to just say no.
Even before Lynch’s outburst, there were rumblings of a challenge to the incumbent:
“Attorney Patrick Roath, described by Politico as a “voting rights advocate and Deval Patrick alum,” is weighing a bid against the congressman in next year’s Democratic primary, according to an unnamed source.
Roath hasn’t commented publicly, but the day after Lynch’s eruption, he tweeted, “Arrogance is bad. So is entitlement.”
In the current political environment, MAGA Republicans are no longer opponents or adversaries, they’re the enemy. Fascism is never acceptable. It must be opposed at every turn. If Lynch doesn’t get that, then it’s time for him to go.
Repeat after me: Dare to be unreasonable.
