The last 10 years have been a disaster for those who want to believe that intelligence is a requirement to be wealthy. This theory has especially had a tough time over the last month.
The reality of Trump is fileting it, dipping it in batter, deep frying it, and serving it up with two sides before smashing the plate over the true believer’s head.
The partners of the big law firms that Adrastos writes about here make up one example. The spineless capitulators figured they could appease President Rotting Semi-Sentient Carrot at the price of just doing some basic, uncontroversial pro bono work. And, they’d get to keep making millions and millions per year.
Unfortunately, the authoritarian mafioso that runs the country at this current time is like any organized crime unit in that they can never be appeased, and you always have to pay more as a protection racket progresses. They seemed surprised at this.
That anyone would not see this coming, especially after the former Columbia University president, Minouche Shafik, was canned even after she appeased the right-wingers in Congress, is something else. Trump cannot be appeased. I guess the allure of a tax cut was too much.

If our two greyhounds see a squirrel during one of our walks, they will try to chase it. This is not a confounding puzzle as to why they would chase a squirrel. They are dogs; that’s what they do. They have a predator-prey instinct. It’s apparent.

But the shock among the captains of industry, lawfirm partners, and elite pundits that Donald Trump is a fascist dipshit is just amazing. Between the story at the link and the top finance bros being very very excited about Trump winning so they can tell dick jokes at work and then shocked he ended up being, well, Trump as far as economic savvy makes it hard to argue that these very wealthy people are top-tier smart.
Even if they are not super wealthy, our elite pundits are not exactly hurting for dough. But some of them are expressing shock and surprise that Donald Trump is being Donald Trump.
