One can only hope. Once in a while the lunatic fringe gets a dim inkling that the fringe is exactly what they are, and try to pull back from the delusion that they are the majority rather then , well, the fringe. Fortunately, we have people like Big Jim to push them over that edge.

I certainly appreciate your right to say what you want on your own
website, and to ban me if you choose to do so. But, in the interest of
accuracy:

Romney was never an abortionist. In his private and church life he
has been pro-life. Politically he took the libertarian position, which
I personally disagree with, and understand the feelings of others on
this point.

Romney is the quintessential capitalist, not a socialist. RomneyCare
includes a mandate (added by the legislature) that everyone get
insurance. One could certainly disagree with that mandate as an
intrusion on freedom, but it is not “socialism” any more than the
mandate to buy car insurance from a private insurer is “socialism.” The
provision of insurance and health care remains firmly in the private
sector.

As far as I know, Romney is not a bastard. He was born in wedlock,
as have all his children and grandchildren been born in wedlock.

many of them were goaded, even baited into it, virtually all the purged
freepers said something that led to their ban. They would get tired of
being attacked all the time, and lash out personally at someone, and
then they’d get zapped.

But it was still within their power to
control their own fate. It was like one of those bad movies where all
the prisoners are standing, and the guards are trying to bait them into
throwing a punch so the guards can kill them, and one guy keeps saying
“don’t take the bait”, but one by one the others can’t take it anymore,
launch a punch, and end up dead.

It was all very “Lord of the Flies” though, how other freepers danced on their graves.

The most surprising and disappointing aspect of our politics is how
little pushback there has been against the vile, extremist rhetoric
that has characterized such a large part of the anti-Obama movement.

President Obama’s White House has largely ignored those accusing him of
“fascism” and “communism,” presumably believing that restraint in
defense of dignity is no vice.

Republican politicians, worried
about future primary fights, have been reluctant to pick a fight with a
radical right that seems to be the most energized section of their
party. Their “moderation” has consisted of a non-benign neglect of the
extremists and of accusing the president merely of “socialism.” And so
it is that the first genuinely ringing call for moderation has come
from a man who is effectively without a party and whose own demeanor
and career define temperance.

Jim Leach spent 30 years as a
Republican member of Congress who went his own way. If this meant
standing almost alone against his caucus, he was content to do so…

…Leach offered his critique of extremism in a speech at the National
Press Club titled “Bridging Cultures” a few days before Thanksgiving.
It deserves far more attention than it has received.

“Little
is more important for the world’s leading democracy in this
change-intensive century,” Leach argued, “than establishing an ethos of
thoughtfulness and decency of expression in the public square.”..

Leach’s speech is the kickoff for a 50-state “civility tour,” and my
hunch is that this very civil man may have to put up with a lot of
incivility along the way. It’s strange that a call to consider
respecting each other more might become a controversial endeavor. This
is precisely why Leach’s witness to moderation requires an immoderate
dose of courage.
