Anyone else remember John Sayles’ 1984 indie hit, The Brother From Another Planet? It was a classic fish out of water story about an alien who looked like a black dude landing in Harlem instead of small town America. I thought of it when I read the coverage of Mitt Offshore’s appearance at the NAACP national meeting. Weird Mitt is a fish out of water anywhere but among his plutocratic and LDS peers.
The conventional wisdom is that we’re supposed to give Romney credit for showing up. I call bullshit on the CW. Mitt Offshore went there to get booed to prove his winger bona fides to his dubious base. The mere mention of repealing “Obamacare” did the trick and got his ass booed. Some of us remember that it was the deathers and birthers who dubbed the ACA that. It was deployed as a boo buzz word and it worked.
Mitt went on Fox after getting jeered where went all Dick Nixon on us:
“I spoke with a number of African-American leaders after the event and they said, you know, a lot of folks do not want to say they will not vote for President Obama but they are disappointed in his lack of policies to improve the schools,” Romney told Fox, according to a rush transcript. “The president has not been able to get the job done and people want to see someone would can get the economy going so I expect to get the African American votes, and at the end of my speech having a standing ovation was generous and hospitable and I believe we disagree on some issues like ‘Obamacare’ on a lot of issues people see eye to eye, they want someone getting the economy going.”
Nixon had his “secret” plan to end the Vietnam War and now Romney has secret black supporters. I don’t know whether to laugh, cry and retch. I might do all three at once…
I used to think Tricky Dick was the weirdest major party nominee of my lifetime. But Mitt has sped past the Trickster on his jet ski or is that on the dressage horse named Rafalca? Whichever it is he’s an alien but unlike the one in the Bowie song, he ain’t lovable, just strange:
