We begin with our standard sausage disclaimer: I realize that Tony Soprano is wearing Italian spiral sausages, not sausage links, but they’re close enough.
This post isn’t as tasty as Sunday dinner at Carmela Soprano’s house, but it’s more nutritional.
Let’s get down to the meat of the matter. Each entry will be followed by a marginally relevant musical selection. Marginalia is my jam.
Gret Stet Prison Fiasco: Former Picayune reporter Richard A. Webster has a great piece in ProPublica with a really long title, “Everyone Will Die In Prison”: How Louisiana’s Plan To Lock People Up Longer Imperils Its Sickest Inmates.
Thanks, Governor Landry.
Da Defamation Lawyer: The NYT has a swell piece by Elizabeth Williamson about high powered Manhattan lawyer Michael J. Gottleib. He’s the guy who represented Ruby Freeman and Shay Moss in their suit against Rudy Giuliani. Well done, sir.
The History Of 3rd Party Veep Nominees: After Bobby Junior picked his running mate, NPR’s Ron Elving wrote a fine piece about past Veep picks. IMO, the worst and weirdest one was when George Wallace picked General Curtis (Bombs Away) LeMay as his running mate in 1968.
LeMay’s loose talk about nukes is widely believed to have harmed not helped the Wallace campaign. FYI, George C. Scott’s character in Dr. Strangelove was based on LeMay.
Criminals, Not Hostages: The good people at Just Security did some research about intersection of the Dipshit Insurrection and the law. The title says it all: Trump’s Promise To Free Jan. 6 Inmates In DC Jail- All Of Them Assaulted Law Enforcement Officers.
The next thing you know, Trump will accuse jailers of reenacting this 10cc classic.
Apocalypse Trump: There’s a brilliant piece at TPM by Sarah Posner with an epic title: Apocalyptic Picture Trump Paints For Evangelicals Shows Where Campaign Is Headed. Try saying that five times really fast. Betcha can’t, neither can I.
The Indicted Impeached Insult Comedian’s appeal to bible bangers is all about fear as is this Roy Wood song.
Republican Cowards: Finally, a piece from The Atlantic by editor Jeffrey Goldberg. It was inspired by former Ohio Senator Rob Portman’s overreacting to a question posed by Goldberg at a public forum.
Goldberg calls out the GOP senators who denounced Trump’s insurrection then voted to acquit him at his second impeachment trial. Once again, the title says it all: A Study In Senate Cowardice.
Fear of Trump mobs is often cited privately by these chicken shit pols to justify their vote. Funny thing that none of the 7 who voted to convict has been attacked by Trumpers. We elect Senators to lead, not cower.
The last word goes to They Might Be Giants. It should be Rob Portman’s theme song:
