Despite the New York Times and other DC media outlets/punditry focusing like a laser on Biden’s age, it is becoming harder and harder to ignore Donald Trump’s cognitive decline.
The Times is still beating the Biden age drum, for extremely petty reasons despite their executive editor’s disturbing claim that being pro-democracy is a form of bias. But despite the Old Gray Lady’s attempt to put her thumb on the scale of reality, Trump’s mental decline is apparent.
It is tempting to Trump’s recent behavior as the same old Trump, but it is more incoherent, wilder, and somehow more disturbing. Here are some examples, a sort of greatest hits of a man slipping further and further into the grasp of dementia.
- After his 34 guilty verdicts, Trump held a press conference that was nothing more than a bizarre rant that was very difficult to follow.

- During a speech at the NRA’s annual meeting in May, Trump froze and stopped speaking for more than 30 seconds. Despite various defenses ranging from the pause being a “dramatic effect” to once again blaming the workers for a so-called faulty teleprompter, it was a very odd moment. He just stopped with no explanation, no complaints about a teleprompter, he just…stopped.
- Back in February, after winning the South Carolina primary, Trump forgot one of his kid’s names. Look, no one sane (read: not a Trumper) is going to mistake the guy for Father of the Year but even most deadbeat dads know their children’s names.
- There have been several moments this year where even The Voice of Trump, Fox News, had to cut away because he became so nonsensical.

- During a rally in Wildwood, New Jersey where attendance was greatly exaggerated by Trump and dutifully reported as “tens of thousands” by the media, Trump spent part of the time praising Hannibal Lector while criticizing Joe Biden’s immigration policy. What the what now? No, really, that’s what he did. Called Lector, a fictional character, a “wonderful man.”
- Trump has been fond of making arguments in the style of your worst right-wing uncle, that is if your right-wing uncle left the Thanksgiving table to go smoke meth in the basement bathroom and came back talking about sharks and electric boat batteries. You may have heard about this, Trump was making an argument against electric vehicles. Trump claimed that electric boats take hours to get anywhere because they are so slow (news to the Navy, which has many electric boats) and then if they sink, you could get electrocuted by the powerful battery. None of this is reasoned, batteries in electric boat motors are designed to prevent such an electrocution. And then some how he brought his hatred of sharks into the mix? He also included an imaginary business leader who told him the questions he was asking were very very smart because Trump is a very very smart boy. The video of it is nuts, even for Trump.
- Trump also has become obsessed with washing machines not having any water because of Biden. And waterless showers. And something about rain. Who knows.

- By the way, it’s not just me, a silly progressive who is obviously biased, taking note of Trump’s cognitive decline.
- I could go on, but here’s a summary of Trump screwing up people’s names. By the way, if you are going to rip on your opponent’s cognitive abilities, try to at least remember the shady doctor’s name that was your White House physician.
