World Listening Day Potpourri

Image from Samuel Fuller’s Underworld USA.

I was feeling overwhelmed by the churning of the news cycle when I realized I hadn’t done a First Draft Potpourri post since last October. That’s my answer to news overkill. They’ve been somewhat replaced in my arsenal by irksome things posts. Does that make this a throwback post? Beats the hell outta me. I just hope you’re listening to old voices on World Listening Day.

The featured image has nothing to do with listening, I just dig it. Are you listening to me? Good. Let’s move on.

I may not be watching the RNC or consuming any cable news this week, but I’m reading about the sycophantic doings in Milwaukee. The usual MAGA suspects are making the usual MAGA speeches. There was one surprise, Sean O’Brien, the Teamsters Union honcho.

O’Brien didn’t endorse the Insult Comedian-Beardo ticket but the mere act of speaking at the RNC has pissed off other labor leaders and the White House. I’ve seen some ignorant opining on social media about the Teamsters and the GOP. They *have* endorsed a Republican presidential candidate. It was Tricky Dick in 1972 and was based on the antipathy to the Democratic party spawned by the Real RFK’s pursuit of Jimmy Hoffa.

Haven’t people seen Hoffa or The Irishman? They’re both too long but Jack Nicholson plays the mobbed-up title character in Hoffa. Lesser Jack is better than no Jack.

Don’t believe me about the Teamsters and GOP? How about a picture of then Teamster honcho Frank Fitzsimmons with Nixon:

Notice the pinky ring on Fitz’s finger. Is it a sign of mob influence or just a ring? Discuss amongst yourselves.

I wonder what Fitz and Tricky were listening to that day. Was it the wind? Tricky claimed to like Merle Haggard, after all:

There’s been so much going on that I haven’t followed the Menendez corruption trial that closely. It had a happy ending: He was convicted on all 16 counts and faces 200+ years in the slammer.

Is this what Biden’s “weaponization” of DOJ looks like? Menendez is a Democrat who was chairman of the Senate foreign relations committee when indicted. The feds also convicted the hapless Hunter Biden. What? No pardon?

Since we’re on the subject of the Menendez trial, allow me to link to my previous posts on the subject:

My title work is strong in those posts. In lieu of a listening song, let’s go for the gold like that fool Bob did:

Speaking of weaponization-a word I hate but find useful-Judge Aileen Cannon used the uproar over the Trump shooting to mute any uproar over her dismissing the purloined papers case. It could be a lucky break for Team Smith as it gives them a reason to urge the 11th Circuit to remove Cannon from the case. It may not turn out that way, but it beats the hell outta watching her slow walk everything. Stay tuned.

I have a nickname update. I’ve used several variations on the Insult Comedian theme over the years but have decided to return to the original coined in 2015. It’s snappier and involves less typing than adding impeached, indicted, or convicted.

Finally, America’s favorite disbarred lawyer is attending the RNC:

Looks like Rudy had a snootful. He’s been known to take a drink or seven.

Rudy may not be a good listener, but I know you lot are. World Listening Day continues but it’s time for this post to conclude.

The last word goes to Talking Heads:
