Dear Trump Voters,
I remember when you called yourself conservatives, when your soul wasn’t a shriveled mummified dark husk, you used to love to yell at us libs about “supporting the troops.” You used to question our love of country.
In fact, you folks used to question my father, a Normandy vet, and his love of America because he supported Bill Clinton. You certainly were no stranger to sinking low, on occasion. The key here is “on occasion.” Now it’s like breathing to you.
One subject this week among my friends who have fathers who fought in wars of the past is how upset our dads would be at the disgusting antics of Trump and his campaign staff at Arlington National Cemetery. I know my father would be enraged. And yet you love it, defend it, revel in it, because you think it “owns the libs.”
You went down a pretty dark hole in 2004 when you wore purple band-aids to mock a Vietnam vet, John Kerry. That was really owning those libs. That was quite a funny way of “supporting the troops.” You could have come back from that, but you doubled down and then some with Trump.
Trashing veterans was always a feature of his campaign. The man disparaged vets in the early days of his campaign. You had plenty of opportunities to say “enough” and go with another Republican. Another person with a veteran father, Stephen Rodrick, wrote in Rolling Stone about your hero:
I didn’t expect much better from Trump who has — deep breath — labeled John McCain a “loser” because he got captured when his plane was shot out of the Vietnam sky. He also dodged a 2020 visit to a French cemetery honoring American dead from World War I because his hair might get mussed up and, besides, “Why should I go to that cemetery? It’s filled with losers.” And we will never forget the time he mocked the mother of Humayun Khan, an army captain killed by a car bomb in Iraq, for standing alongside her husband, Khizr, at the 2016 Democratic National Convention while he criticized Trump for his anti-Muslim rhetoric, but not speaking herself. Khizr Khan said his wife, Ghazala, had not spoken because she was afraid she would break down. “Trump is devoid of feeling the pain of a mother who has sacrificed her son,” said Khizr Khan.
Is this the man that you think of as a true patriot?
I would bring up the other terrible stuff Trump did this week. I could mention that he shared a crude, sexist slander about his opponent, but you are likely racist and sexist (did your parents warn you that who you assiociate with is a reflection on you?). So you love that shit. Eat it up with a spoon, so very excited that there is a politician as horrible as you that’s “brave” enough to say it.
He also went on a bizarre social media rant where he talked about jailing political opponents. You love that shit, too, because you openly hate democracy.
And speaking of that, none of this is working out for you so far. Rant about rigged polls all you want, but even the friendly-to-you polls are trending away from your boy. Believe it or not, Trump has to reach more than just you and your rally pals. He needs to expand his voting base. Yeah, I know, Trump would win 70% of the vote if everything wasn’t rigged. Meanwhile, back on Planet Reality, pushing a female Arlington National Cemetery employee out of the way so a Trump ad can be produced in an area where cameras are restricted is not exactly going to endear Trump to normal human beings.
This is the person you are going to vote for, right? This is who you are, and you are damn proud of it. But it is looking less and less likely you will win. So, will you turn to violence? Or will you accept the loss, and perhaps even go back to being a regular old conservative?
You know, one who doesn’t laugh when a politician calls dead war heroes suckers and losers. Your soul might even recover. It’s never too late to come back and participate in America, a land of democracy and true freedom, as opposed to the deluded hellscape you live in now.
