The rules of American politics have been upended since the advent of MAGA. Our elections have traditionally been about the present and future. In 2026, MAGA Republicans are stuck on the past, to be specific 2020.
2020 was a terrible year. It was the year of the pandemic and worldwide lockdowns to halt the spread of COVID. While researching featured images, I landed on the masked bust, which epitomizes 2020: It was a bust and the sensible among us wore masks in public while others whined incessantly about freedom, man.
2020 was a bad trip, which is why GOP efforts to replay specific things about it are so bizarre. They are, of course, things they don’t like and wish hadn’t happened. I’m unsure whether to call it magical thinking or wishful thinking, unthinking is more like it.
I wrote about the Fauci hearing on Saturday. It was an attempt by the Insult Comedian’s frenemy Senator Aqua Buddha to pin the blame for a naturally occurring event on a human actor Dr. Fauci. Rand Paul claims he’s a mad scientist who colluded with Chinese mad scientists to create or cover up COVID’s creation in a Wuhan lab. At least that’s what I think they believe: coherence isn’t the strong suit of the COVID conspiracists. Madness is.
Just change mega to MAGA and Bob’s your right-wing uncle. It’s up to the voters to chase the gremlins out of power before they eat us out of house and home:
President Pennywise remains fixated on the BIG LIE of 2020, that he won the election. This delusional thinking has infected his allies who are still banging on about it SIX YEARS LATER. The MAGA GOP’s electoral strategy, if you want to call it that, looks doomed to fail: throwing shit against the wall to see if it sticks never works. Only MAGA maggots want to revisit or relitigate 2020.
Much to Patti Davis’ horror, Trump has Ronald Reagan’s portrait in a prominent place in the Oval Office. The current GOP violates Reagan’s prime electoral directive: The most optimistic candidate wins. They’re banking on SIX YEAR OLD grievances to pull their proverbial chestnuts out of the fire. It won’t work when our society is on fire because of the excesses of the Trump regime.
Team MAGA is trying to rat fuck the election. Our guard must stay up but nothing in their track record suggests that they have the ability to execute on their shambolic strategy. Repeat after me: It’s the execution, stupid.
It’s time to modify the Wayback Machine to travel forward in time and set it to Tuesday November 3, 2026. Elections should be about the future, not the past. Team MAGA may be stuck on 2020, but the rest of us are not.
