RIP TWOP

One of my favorite parts of the Internet is being killed off: DailyCandy and Television Without Pity, two high-profile Internet content properties owned by NBCUniversal, are being shuttered, a move that management told staff this morning would be occurring next week. Local recommendations site DailyCandy had been purchased by the Comcast media unit in 2008 for $125 million from the New York-based Pilot Group. The sassy TWoP TV review and recap site — its motto is “Spare the snark, spoil the networks” — was purchased by NBCU’s Bravo cable unit in 2007. Both were founded in the Web 1.0 era. … Continue reading RIP TWOP

Newspapers: Someone Else Is Successful At Something So We Need to Do That

Just because Buzzfeed is good at what Buzzfeed is doing, does not mean that you need to be Buzzfeed: Internal documents obtained by WW show that a quota system is being put in place that calls for steep increases in posting to Oregonlive.com, and promises compensation for those employees who post most often. The new policy, shown to the editorial staff in a PowerPoint presentation in late February, provides that as much as 75 percent of reporters’ job performance will be based on measurable web-based metrics, including how often they post to Oregonlive.com. Beat reporters will be expected to post … Continue reading Newspapers: Someone Else Is Successful At Something So We Need to Do That

Newhouse: It’s the Feds’ Fault We’re Cheap!

There’s just no end to the ways you can use Obama as an excuse: Two University of Texas journalism students called me last week hoping to get some experience/clips in exchange for class credit. I had to reluctantly turn them down, and both even countered with the offer to write articles “for free” just to amass a few clips with a reputable publication. I told them that would get me in even more trouble with Uncle Sam. They were really bummed. I don’t have the official word from my management about the “why.” I suspect, like a lot of employers, … Continue reading Newhouse: It’s the Feds’ Fault We’re Cheap!

Will Analysts Look At The Price Of Sacks In The Long Run?

From Album 5 Though not really something front and center on my radar screen (as I get older and more brittle, football is something I’m less interested in), this caught my attention, not the least reason being it’s more exposure of the rank hypocrisy of “amateur athletics.” By the way, if anyone out there really believes that big-time college sports feature strictly “student-athletes…” can I interest you in some soon-to-be-drained Florida swampland (Hoffa’s final resting place? Maybe!)…and a bridge to get you there? Some college sports — like football — have always been big business. Hugh McElhenny took a pay … Continue reading Will Analysts Look At The Price Of Sacks In The Long Run?

The Dan Snyder Acronym Blues

In the great tradition of stubborn, clueless douchebags everywhere, Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder is trying to PR his way out of his woes. Snyder, of course, refuses to change his team’s racist name and keeps trotting out spokes-Chiefs to back him up. Unfortunately for Snyder, they keep turning out to be dubious dudes. As a movie Indian would say: Snyder, heap big dope or is that dupe? He’s certainly a douche. In the great tradition of filthy rich robber barons everywhere, Snyder is now resorting to bribery. He’s formed a foundationwith the laudable goal of helping Native Americans by … Continue reading The Dan Snyder Acronym Blues

Technology is Neat: Clustering Consoles Edition

As a lady in the computer sciences world who still operates mostly in academia, I actually don’t encounter a lot of people who assume I don’t know how to computer. This makes it particularly annoying when I DO encounter such people, though, so when I had someone try to tell me that the reason the Air Force had made a cluster out of PS3s back in 2009 was because the PS3’s CPU “does math”. For those of you who aren’t computer people, the CPU in your microwave does math. Trying to tell a PhD student in computer sciences (who has, … Continue reading Technology is Neat: Clustering Consoles Edition

Illinois Governor’s Race

Republicans obviously thought to themselves, “That Mitt Romney was such a hit with the common people. He was so down to earth, so relatable. Let’s nominate us one of those.” There’s the 6,870-square-foot Rauner mansion on a half-acre lot in Winnetka; two units, including a penthouse, in a luxury high-rise overlooking Millennium Park; a waterfront villa in the Florida Keys with a 72-foot-long pool; ranches in Montana and Wyoming; and a condo in an upscale Utah ski resort. Most carry price tags well into the seven figures. But topping the list is a penthouse in a landmark co-op building along … Continue reading Illinois Governor’s Race
