Sunday Morning Video: Los Lobos Live At Woodstock 99

Los Lobos are playing a free gig here at the Crescent City Blues and BBQ Fest next Saturday. I’m pretty jazzed about it so I thought I’d post this July 24, 1999 set: If you’re there, I’ll be the chap in the Grateful Dead/San Francisco Giants shirt hollering for Bertha: Continue reading Sunday Morning Video: Los Lobos Live At Woodstock 99

Sunday Morning Video: Allman Brothers Band Live At Woodstock 94

We had pulled pork, collard greens, and mac-and-cheese from our favorite local barbecue joint yesterday. It left me craving southern fried blues rock with with a side of fat-n-greasy slide guitar. The video on this isn’t fabulous, but I wanted a set with both Dickie Betts and Warren Haynes in the band. This is the one:   Continue reading Sunday Morning Video: Allman Brothers Band Live At Woodstock 94

SMV: Zappa Sunday

I thought I’d do something this different and feature 3 short videos either about or featuring the late, great Frank Zappa. First, a History Detectives segment about a mysterious collage that was allegedly tied to Zappa. No spoilers from me, I’ll let Gwen Wright tell the story: Here’s a Zoot Allures era appearance by FZ on the Mike Douglas Show of all places: Finally, please sign in and watch Frank as the mystery guest on What’s My Line: Continue reading SMV: Zappa Sunday

SMV: The Legend Of Jimmy The Greek

I hadn’t seen this 30 for 30 film until this week. It’s *really* good. All I knew about my countryman, Dimetrios Georgios Synodinos aka Jimmy the Greek Snyder, was his CBS sports gig, and how he lost it by saying something racist back in the days before Rushbo would turn you into a martyr for being a bigoted fuckstick. To his credit, Jimmy the Greek was devastated by what happened. Also, to his credit: he punched out Brent Musburger in a bar. Anyway, there’s much more to his story, it’s a good ‘un:   Continue reading SMV: The Legend Of Jimmy The Greek

Sunday Morning Video: Longshots

The ABA only existed from 1967 to 1976, but had a major impact on the history of professional basketball. This year’s conference finals feature two former ABA franchises, the Indiana Pacers and the San Antonio Spurs. There’s a chance that 2 old ABA teams could meet in the finals for only the second time since the merger. Here’s a brief history of the league that gave us the three point shot and the red, white, and blue basketball: Continue reading Sunday Morning Video: Longshots

Sunday Morning Video: American Masters- Johnny Carson

All the chatter about David Letterman’s retirement got me thinking about the *real* King of late night, Johnny Carson. He made it look so easy when he was on the air that it was, uh, easy to forget how damn good he was. Here’s the 2012 American Masters film Johnny Carson: King of Late Night: Continue reading Sunday Morning Video: American Masters- Johnny Carson

Sunday Morning Video: A Day at the Races

To my great surprise, I found one of my favorite Marx Brothers movies on the YouTube. It appears to have uploaded by a Cyrillic chap of some sort. Oh, those zany Russians. In the immortal words of Chico Marx, “Get-ta your tootsie frootsie ice-a cream” and watch this 1937 classic when you have an extra 109 minutes: Continue reading Sunday Morning Video: A Day at the Races
