Sunday Morning Video: The Grateful Dead Live in 1990

I am a happy musical camper. There’s a YouTuber called Voodoonola who has posted some astonishing Grateful Dead concert videos. They obviously come from the Jumbotron feed at various Dead shows. Fine sound and picture quality = Happy Adrastos. This 1990 show is a keeper. The first set combination of Truckin’ and Touch of Grey is an unusual one and it really lifts the show into the stratosphere. If you want to see the set list or track hop, watch it on YouTube. That is all. Continue reading Sunday Morning Video: The Grateful Dead Live in 1990

Sunday Morning Video: The First World War-Part 1: Race To Arms

We're approaching the 100th anniversary of the Great War, which is a source of enduring fascination to me. I was delighted to find this fabulous 2003 documentary series online courtesy of YouTuber, the Grim Doctor. He has a playlist set up if you want to see the entire 10 part series. I'm re-watching it as something of an antidote to the horrendous History Channel travesty, which I'll write about when I'm finished watching the whole thing. The things I do for my readers.   Continue reading Sunday Morning Video: The First World War-Part 1: Race To Arms

Sunday Morning Video: The Father Christmas Suit

Writer Roy Clarke was the creative force behind the classic Britcom, Keeping Up Appearances. He created two, count em two, great comic characters in Onslow the lovable layabout, and his snooty sister-in-law Hyacinth Bucket, I mean Bouquet. Here’s a holiday episode for your enjoyment: Continue reading Sunday Morning Video: The Father Christmas Suit

Sunday Morning Video: Come Dine With Me-Ealing

Come Dine With Meis a long running British comedy/cooking/game/competition show featuring a group of strangers cooking for one another. BBC America ran it for awhile before they became obsessed with Top Gear. A YouTuber has posted a bevy of episodes, This one features an expatriate black American, a Tory activist, a yuppie fitness fanatic, and a left wing school teacher. There’s now an American version on Lifetime and it’s pretty darn good although the comedic narrator isn’t as funny as Dave Lamb on the original. They really should have hired Kevin (Tom Servo) Murphy or maybe even me: Continue reading Sunday Morning Video: Come Dine With Me-Ealing

Sunday Morning Video: The Fog of War

I’ve been gassing on about the fog of history, so I decided to post Errol Morris’ brilliant documentary about Vietnam war architect Robert Strange McNamara. Unlike a certain recent Defense Secretary whose nickname rhymes with crummy, McNamara learned some things from the mistakes he made in life: Continue reading Sunday Morning Video: The Fog of War

Sunday Morning Video: Nova- Who Killed Lindbergh’s Baby?

And now for something completely different on the SMV. I’ve been interested in the Lindbergh kidnapping for as long as I can remember. This NOVA documentary takes a look at the case and concludes that while the man who was convicted of the crime, Richard Hauptmann, was guilty, he did not act alone. Continue reading Sunday Morning Video: Nova- Who Killed Lindbergh’s Baby?

Sunday Morning Video: Smile Live

Smile was one of the great lost albums of the Sixties. Neither the other Beach Boys nor Capitol Records liked Brian Wilson’s ground breaking music so the album as whole was shelved although vast chunks of it were recorded by the Beach Boys. In 2004, Brian recorded a version of Smile. Here’s a live performance by Brian and his crack band: Continue reading Sunday Morning Video: Smile Live

Sunday Morning Video: Go Ride The Music

Here’s a classic hippie dippy teevee music documentary featuring Jefferson Airplane, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and Jerry Garcia. It was first aired on KQED in San Francisco way back in 1970. Its only flaw is the lack of motherfuckers in the Airplane’s We Can Be Together. Tear down the wall, motherfucker: Continue reading Sunday Morning Video: Go Ride The Music
