Yes. Yes a thousand times. Every time something like this happens, I dread the platitudes, the “prayers up!” messages, the ways in which we’ve made faith into some kind of dodge that makes us good people. Like if we think and pray, that gets us out of something. Like that’s what we have to do. It’s insulting, and not just to people for whom prayer is talking to an imaginary, ridiculous friend. It’s insulting to people for whom prayer is a real act of faith. It’s insulting to people for whom prayer is critical, is active and purposeful and rooted … Continue reading Laborare est Orare

Since I’m planning to do three weeks of holiday covers, I did some crowd sourcing for this feature on the Book of Zucker. Many answered the call and I’m posting three of the kookier ones this week plus a fake one for lagniappe. Y’all know that I love me some lagniappe.
We’ll begin with a mildly zany one suggested by my friend Kevin:

The second one comes from a genuine New Orleans character known as Stybby:

The last ones come from our very own Tommy T. I think the first cover needs to be put in virtual plain brown wrapping paper, so it’s break time.

To: E. Pluribus UnumQuite likely a case of Islamic Terrorism at the Planned Parenthood Clinic, despite Obama promises that America was safe over the Thanksgiving Holiday.

To: E. Pluribus UnumAfter following the story via Drudge and Fox News,

it sounds like Planned Parenthood, so far, has had nothing to do with incident except being in the general vicinity. My guess this far is that by putting “Planned Parenthood” in the headline, the lame stream media is trying to garner some public bias before the facts are even out. Typical.

I don’t know where we get the idea that our capacity for compassion and empathy, that our desire for justice and our pursuit of it by whatever means we have, is finite. I don’t know where we get the idea that there is only so much. I don’t know where we get the idea that there’s a bottom to it. That we have to guard it jealously, and only use it in the right times, the most right times. That if we spend it on you, we will have nothing left for anyone else. As if love is a bowl of … Continue reading We Can Always Find a Reason Not to Care
