McMichael Sr knew Arbery and knew his record. Arbery wasn’t jogging in work boots and there had been a rash of thefts and break-ins, of cars AND houses. They knew a gun had been stolen from a car. The police WERE called and they intended to hold Arbery until the police got there. Arbery grabbed McMichael Jrs gun and fought him for it. Arbery lost. They aren’t guilty but may be convicted of being white.

These verdicts go against the original intent of the Founders.

That must be the “Kill all the Negroes” clause in the Constitution, right?

There is no way this would have happened during the Founding era.

First, I absolutely concur with this verdict but Trespassing? Being in Real Estate for thirty years, I have to say, I have “trespassed” hundreds of times into homes under construction, as have my clients and many other potential buyers. The builders love it because they want to sell it or get a prospective custom build. People love going into houses, under construction and open, I don’t know why but they do. But not once has a neighbor ever questioned me or called the police.

Today on Tommy T’s obsession with random ruminations – “Big Pharma doesn’t cure” edition

“Big pharma doesn’t cure….”

I’m sick of people saying that “Big Pharma doesn’t cure diseases”. Cures are few and far between (the most recent cure is the one for Hepatitis),because once the damage is done, it’s done.

It’s a little like saying that regular oil changes don’t fix a cracked engine block – of course they won’t, but they might have PREVENTED the hung valve that broke the engine block.

The Eliquis I take keeps me from having multiple AFIB-generated strokes like the ones that struck down my Mom and destroyed her brain, (and the ones that paralyzed her Mom and Dad and destroyed THEIR brains) It doesn’t “cure strokes”.

The Allopurinol I take doesn’t cure me from having had kidney stones, it prevents me from getting them ever again. The first time YOU have one, you’ll be screaming for that pill.

The Januvia I take doesn’t prevent me from having congestive heart failure due to the hereditary deficiencies in my lower limb circulation (my Mom lost both of her legs to this), it ameliorates it.

Now – which one do you want to take away from me?

President Biden on Monday signed into law a $1.2 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill at a boisterous ceremony outside the White House, sealing a major accomplishment of his first term.

Weeks of talks and two trips to the Capitol from Biden culminated earlier this month in a bipartisan vote, with the House passing the bill 228-206. Thirteen Republicans crossed the aisle to support the measure, and six progressive Democrats bucked Biden and party leaders to oppose it.

Mike Pence “ashamed” of Trump, might poach his voters in 2024 election: ex-press secretaryUK Today ^ | 11/15/21 Posted on 11/15/2021, 12:59:57 AM by conservative98Mike Pence is “ashamed” of Donald Trump over the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol and will run against him in 2024 for his base, said Alyssa Farah, who served as a press secretary for the former vice president from 2017 to 2019.[cut]There’s aspects of the record they did together that I know Pence is proud of, but I know he is ashamed of that [January 6], he is ashamed of how the former president conducted himself,” Farah said on CNN Saturday.

Asked if Pence will run against Trump in 2024, the former aide predicted that Pence would launch a presidential campaign and attempt to court the millions of Americans who voted for Trump last November, as well as Republicans voters who were “alienated” by Trump.

Today on Tommy T’s Random Ruminations – Brussels spouts edition

Spouting off

Barbara and I went on a snorkeling trip last time we were in Playa Del Carmen, but only for the boat ride and not to go snorkeling (Inah reef is pretty much dead now). The trip goes from Puerto Adventuras, North around 10 miles along the coast. The “Piratas de Tejas” is a 75-foot V-hull and not a catamaran, so it’s pretty susceptible to the wave action that is mostly nonstop in the channel between the Yucatan and Cozumel island, and it was a pretty rough ride.

For some reason, the crew were playing Spanish language rap and techno (as if any of the 20-odd passengers were going to be dancing around instead of just hanging on) all the way out. We stopped South of the reef, and the snorkelers were herded into a bait ball and led over to the reef. Barbara and I took advantage of the wind, stillness, and impossibly blue water to relax and chat with the other non-snorkelers, and have some ice-cold beers.

After the touristas were loaded back on and lunch served, we headed back.

That’s where it got a little strange.

More after the clickbait…

Today on Tommy T’s Obsession with Random Ruminations – “Blue Lives matter” edition

(short caveat – no, I’m not black, but I was a long-haired hippie in Waco during the 60s and 70s, and can’t count the times I was pulled over and thrown onto the ground (or occasionally into a ditch) with one cop holding a gun on me while the other tore my VW beetle up looking for the drugs I didn’t have.  If you think I was safe from being shot because I was white, think again.)

“Cops’ lives matter”

These days, every time a cop gets shot, right-wingnuttia goes into knee-jerk hyperdrive.

“Cops’ lives matter!!”

Duh, motherfucker.

But you know what?

It’s their goddamned JOB to put themselves in harm’s way. Their JOB dictates that they go after people who might shoot them. Every single fucking day.

I don’t recall any of the civilians they shoot on a monotonous basis having that kind of job description.

My Dad worked as a Air Base fireman for many years following his discharge from the navy. It was his job to put himself in danger (and suffered third-degree burns on his arm one day while doing so). He knew exactly what he had signed up for, and took the consequences as they came. It was his job.

It’s not my job to worry about getting shot dead by a cop with a chip on his shoulder, and it’s not yours either.

It’s not my job to be shot dead by a cop because he didn’t like my attitude, or because I had the temerity to make eye contact with him.

In related news, when a test pilot crashes, it’s a tragedy.

When someone minding his own business in his own living room has a plane plough into it and burn him to death, that’s a tragedy, too.

Now – which one of these two had “possibly dying from a plane crash” in his job description?

Today on Tommy T’s Random Ruminations – “Rooty Tooty” edition

Something different today, but still in the “Random Ruminations” category – a little story from one of my Facebook political group friends, Bob Crespo :

THE GHOSTS OF SAN GENNARO FEASTS PAST, OR WHY I HATED RUDY BEFORE HATING RUDY WAS COOL

In the 1990s I worked at the San Gennaro Feast in Manhattan’s Little Italy for about 5 years running, an 11-day affair that saw Mulberry Street transformed for 12 blocks starting at Canal Street and ending on Houston Street. This is the largest, longest and most famous Italian American street fair in the country, and a popular enough attraction to be mentioned in tourist brochures, but is the only touristy thing attended overwhelmingly by New Yorkers themselves and Greater Metropolitan Area residents.
It centers around the 2 weekends surrounding the September 19th Feast Day of San Gennaro, who turns out to be a bishop of Naples, Italy who was martyred by some Roman Emperor way back in 305 AD for rubbing him the wrong way. Emperors, Holy Roman or otherwise, tend to be a touchy lot, and it’s best for most of us to avoid them if we value our heads.
The fact that almost no one knows a thing about San Gennaro is not an issue at all, however, and Mulberry Street was selected because it’s the block in Little Italy with the church, the beautiful Basilica of St. Patrick where the opening ceremonies and a short parade begins, kicking off the festivities.
Mulberry Street is transformed into a carnival for 11 days, closed to vehicular traffic and lined on both sides of the street with everything from simple wooden booths to elaborate carnival trailers, selling sausage and peppers, zeppoles, Italian Ices, sweet confections and other ethnic culinary treats, sideshow attractions, kiddie rides, games of chance lined with young fellows trying to win a kewpie doll for their special girls, vendors selling jewelry, T-shirts, CDs or souvenir merchandise, clown-ducking booths and, finally, to the very heart of the San Gennaro Feast and where I came in, in one of dozens of wine and beer vending booths keeping the whole enterprise lubricated, happy and animated.
I just so happened to be the very best wine vendor in the San Gennaro Feast, approaching the job like a carnival barker and spending 11 days in row selling my wares at the top of my lungs. New York City street festivals are legendary for their chaos, and are noisy and crowded affairs, with exactly no specific itinerary and holding different charms for different people.
People just sort of wander where their feet takes them, and when they wandered in the vicinity of my wine booth they were likely to hear any or all of these lines:
“My wine is better, my beer is colder – it’s just that simple!”
“Check your watches, it’s Vino Time”
“Step right up for liquid love, ladies! Form a line!”
“Let’s talk, people… because Chianti!”
“Whatever the question is, wine is the answer!

Today in Tommy T’s Obsession with random ruminations – Halloween fun edition

Halloween fun in days gone by

I used to own a half-duplex, with a sidewalk that passed by the guest bedroom window. One Halloween, I wanted to do something other than just hand out candy, and (being allergic to decorating) I decided to set up a scary surprise.

I plugged my 400W bass head into one of my 2X15 cabinets, and set my Yamaha SPX90 effects processor on top of the head, then plugged a SM57 mike into the processor and set the processor to pitch-shift.

OK – let’s try this thing out. I dropped the pitch by one full octave and did a death-metal gutteral pronouncement into the mike.

Cool, but too low-frequency to make out the words.

I adjusted the pitch up to only a half-octave down.

Perfect.

Now, I pushed the 2X15 cabinet up to the inside of the sidewalk-facing window, and opened the window, leaving the blinds down/closed, and waited.

I had turned the amp volume up to three or four, and if I made a low growl, it actually sounded like an irritated lion. I sat in the darkened bedroom and waited.

The first group of twilight trick-or-treaters came up the walk. I held silence and let them pass by on their way to the porch.

My then-wife handed out candy to all, and told them all to be careful leaving, and to watch out for the Candy Troll.

They came back down the sidewalk past the window, and I roared

“GIVE ME YOUR CANDY !!!!”

It was probably in excess of 110db, and sounded like Satan having a really bad day. They were possibly three feet from the bass cabinet inside the window.

The candy went everywhere, the kids screamed and scattered, and my then-wife rushed out (possibly to comfort them?), and one of the little boys turned to her and said:

“This is the best Halloween house EVER!!”

Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) urged his party to focus on President Biden heading into 2022, and not relitigating the 2020 election that former President Trump still falsely claims was stolen.

McConnell, speaking to reporters during a weekly press conference, was asked if he was comfortable with the party embracing Trump. The former president was at a retreat over the weekend for Senate Republicans’ campaign arm and endorsed Sen. Chuck Grassley (R) for reelection in Iowa earlier this month.

“Well I do think we need to be talking about the future, not the past,” McConnell told reporters Tuesday.

Today on Tommy T’s obsession with random ruminations – “You rang?” edition

You rang?

I was staying with a (platonic) girlfriend overnight and head the doorbell ring. Thought
“who could it be this early in the morning?” Heard a conversation at the front door, so I got up from the couch, dressed, and went to see.

My very nice host had opened the door to a pair of Jehovah’s Witnesses, and was trying to be nice and still get them to leave.

Wasn’t happening.

I came up beside her and slipped my arm around her shoulders, saying “Who are these fine people, sweetheart?”. She looked at me and advised me that they were informing her about the Lord Their God, Jesus Christ.

I chuckled gently and told them “I’m terribly sorry. You see, we worship The Dark Lord.” – smiling all the while.

They left a hole in the air from their sudden departure.

Bannon ‘not required to respond’ to subpoena in Jan. 6 probe, lawyer says
NY Post ^ | 10/14/2021 | Bruce Golding

Posted on 10/14/2021, 1:51:14 PM by ChicagoConservative27

Steve Bannon is “not required to respond” to a subpoena from the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the US Capitol because former President Donald Trump says their communications are protected by executive privilege, his lawyer claimed in a letter Wednesday.

Trump’s lawyer told Bannon that the ex-president “is exercising his executive privilege” and instructed him “not to produce documents or testify until the issue of executive privilege is resolved,” lawyer Robert Costello wrote.

“That is is an issue between the Committee and President Trump’s counsel and Mr. Bannon is not required to respond at this time,”

Costello wrote in the letter, posted on Twitter by an ABC News producer.

January 6 panel moves to hold Steve Bannon in criminal contempt CNN ^ Posted on 10/14/2021, 12:59:32 PM by janetjanet998

CNN)The committee investigating the January 6 Capitol Hill riot announced Thursday it is moving forward to hold Trump ally Steve Bannon in criminal contempt for refusing to comply with a subpoena, as his game of chicken with the House panel now enters a new and critical phase.

“Mr. Bannon has declined to cooperate with the Select Committee and is instead hiding behind the former President’s insufficient, blanket, and vague statements regarding privileges he has purported to invoke,” Democratic Rep. Bennie Thompson, who chairs the committee, said in a statement on Thursday. Bannon was scheduled for a deposition in front of the committee on Thursday, and Bannon’s lawyer wrote in a letter the day before to the panel saying that his client will not provide testimony or documents until the committee reaches an agreement with former President Donald Trump over executive privilege or a court weighs in on the matter.

Today on Tommy T’s Obsession with Random Ruminations – Hot Mix in the Summertime edition

One more dip into Wacoville, I think

Before I left for Dallas, my day job (for the City Of Waco Street Department) was driving/operating 20-ton dump trucks, asphalt rollers, and front-end loaders so big I had to climb a 10-rung ladder to get into them.

Obviously I had my commercial license, and my usual job was to hook up the asphalt roller behind the dump truck, load three workers into the cab, and go to the asphalt plant, where the truck would be filled with hot mix (asphalt).  After that, I’d drive to the designated location, let the panels on each side of the truck down, and follow behind on the roller while two of my co-workers dug their shovels into the hot mix on each side, and filled the potholes – the other co-worker drove the truck slowly forward.  As the asphalt cooled, it stuck together and hardened, usually leaving a large triangular pile against the front of the bed. (where it was hardest to reach with the shovels)  Usually, I would release the rear tailgate (which was hinged at the top of the bed), disconnect the adjustable release chains at the bottom, and drive forward slowly, with the bed raising, until the sticky lump at the front of the bed would come unstuck, and slide to the ground.

Simple, no? Until one day, a rookie driver didn’t get rid of the cooling lump, and by the time he got back to the equipment yard, it had solidified into an immovable chunk.

The driver thought he could loosen the chunk by racing backward with the bed lift engaged, and then hitting the brakes. He did this three times without dislodging the chunk.

On the fourth time, the chunk dislodged and slid down the bed to the rear tailgate. Unfortunately, he had neglected to undo the chains on the bottom of the tailgate, locking it closed, and the chunk hit hard.

The front of the truck went high into the air, leaving the driver pretty high off the ground. It stayed there. He began to panic. And then –

The tailgate broke loose.

The truck cab slammed down onto the ground,  bounced up about 10 feet, then fell again. Lather, rinse, repeat.

Four times.

We could see him bouncing off the roof of the cab each time. It looked like something that would happen to Wile E. Coyote. He had been wearing his hard hat, and wasn’t injured, just a little stunned.

He looked at the group of us that had been watching, and we were all laughing hysterically.

Here’s a look at what happens when you’re not watching lour load distribution :

Trump urged GOP senators to vote against McConnell debt deal
The Hill ^ | 10/07/21 08:33 PM EDT | BY OLAFIMIHAN OSHIN

Posted on 10/7/2021, 7:58:41 PM by RandFan

Former President Trump is urging GOP senators to vote against a deal that Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) struck with his Democratic colleagues in the upper chamber to raise the debt ceiling.

“Republican Senators, do not vote for this terrible deal being pushed by folding Mitch McConnell. Stand strong for our Country,” Trump said in an emailed statement Thursday. “The American people are with you!”

Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) announced Thursday morning that he had reached an agreement with McConnell to raise the debt ceiling into the beginning of December.

The agreement would increase the debt limit by $480 billion. Aides expect that will make the next deadline Dec. 3, the same day government funding will expire.

McConnell confirmed the deal with Democrats during a floor speech on Thursday, saying: “The Senate is moving toward the plan I laid out last night to spare the American people from an unprecedented crisis.”

“The pathway our Democratic colleagues have accepted will spare the American people any near-term crisis,” McConnell added.

We see who runs the GOP and it’s not Trump. Trump is a fool. I’ve said it since 1/7 and I’m proven right every day, Trump needs to renounce the GOP and form the Workers MAGA Party. As long as Trump stays with these hacks he will continue to be rolled, played and destroyed.

I don’t know why people here on FR insist that Trump has a core base of support of 80 million voters. He doesn’t.

He probably has 25-30 million dedicated supporters. The rest of the 80 million who voted for him are really just GOP partisans who voted the party line and probably would have preferred another candidate if that option was available.

Today on Tommy T’s Obsession with Random Ruminations – “Missed opportunities” edition

After I moved from Waco to Dallas, I still returned from time to time to see my family.
And I always made a stop at Ray Hennig’s Heart Of Texas Music.

Before Ray moved to Austin and got famous for selling Stevie Ray Vaughn his famous Stratocaster, he was famous in Waco for his ingenious sales technique.

At any other music shop in Waco, if you asked to try something out, you got the stinkeye, an unspoken question of “Are you going to buy this?”, and a grudging “ok”, followed by an admonition to not play it so loud.

At Ray’s, it was different. He encouraged you to crank it up, even if he knew that he wasn’t going to make a sale that day.

Actually, because of his friendly approach to local musicians, he made a LOT of sales, eventually running two of the three Waco music shops out of business. Everything I own, with the exception of a couple of basses and a keyboard, came from there.

Ray’s was where local musicians came to hang out and talk as well. Hell, when the increase in his business led to his leasing the space next door and knocking a big hole in the wall to cojoin the two, he actually put a big couch and easy chair in there so we could gather in comfort.

Anyway, this led to a lot of local musicians hanging out there, and there were quite a few on the day I went by there in 1990.

We were all talking and catching up (everyone there wanted to know how I had fared so far in Dallas) when a gangly dude plugged a guitar into a 100-watt Marshall and started playing.

Badly.

REALLY badly.

“Smoke On The Water” intro badly.

“Sunshine Of Your Love” chords badly.

He was out of tune, couldn’t determine what key he was playing in – at around 110db – you get the picture.

In 5 minutes, he had emptied out Ray Hennig’s.

Completely.

We all headed for a local warehouse where a lot of locals rehearsed, to escape.

I walked past this tone-deaf moron on the way out, and he had the nerve to smile a smirky smile at me.

I found out later on that his name was Vernon Howell.

Yeah – THAT Vernon Howell.

If I’d known then what I know now, I could have crushed his windpipe and killed him.

I would have done possibly 6 years for manslaughter, and all of those men, women, and (especially) children would still be alive.

Missed opportunities…….

.

This is (was) Ray –

And this is (was) Vernon Howell –

.

Burn in hell, Vernon.

President Donald Trump just dropped bombshell news on the matter of election integrity by predicting that officials will “decertify” the 2020 presidential election.

Discussing consequences for the “rigged” election, Trump told Jim Hoft, founder of The Gateway Pundit, during a Friday afternoon interview, “I do believe they are going to decertify the election.”

Today on Tommy T’s obsession with Random Ruminations – guest post edition

Doing something a little different today and posting something that I didn’t write.

The morons currently trying to run Texas into the ground have now made it law that all you need to carry a concealed handgun is the money to buy one, which prompted this post.

I am a gun owner myself, have no wish to carry my Glock21 anywhere, and agree with every single word below from Leonidas Christian Mixon.

*************************************************

“We have a gun problem and a bullshit problem in the United States. Let me start by saying I am a gun owner. I have been since I was 6. I’ve had jobs that required me to carry a weapon. I’ve been shot at more than once. I’ve disarmed people who were trying to kill me. This isn’t coming from someone who doesn’t understand guns. It’s precisely because I do understand them that I’m going to call out the bullshit that stops us from having the reforms to gun laws that we needed years ago. If you want to debate any of the points below, I have no problem. These are simple facts.

1) I need an assault rifle for home defense.  No, you don’t. A short barreled shotgun is the best tool for home defense. And that only counts if you’re insanely proficient with it and you get incredibly lucky. The likelihood you will get the chance to use it is next to zero. If you do, you’re very likely to kill a member of your family accidentally. In a REAL altercation, you don’t get to choose your field of fire. It happens incredibly fast, usually in the dark. If you’re popping off with a rifle, you are going to hit things you don’t intend to. Guns are tools. Period. Assault Rifles are intended to be used on a battlefield. Battlefield tactics don’t work in your house. It’s a bullshit argument.

2) I need to protect myself from a tyrannical Government…  Holy Shit that’s stupid. That idea was from a time when the state of war was much more level. It isn’t now. At all. If an armored transport shows up on your front lawn with a 50 cal on the roof, you and your AK are fucking toast. Soldiers train, and their weapons are an extension of their body. You will instantly lose. And before you bring up guerrilla fighters in Afghanistan or Iraq… you need a reality check. Those people were born in a country that was at war, on their soil, for their entire lives. You don’t compare to that on your best day. And they die in FAR greater numbers than they kill.

3) Gun registration, background checks, etc are a slippery slope to confiscation.  Bullshit. We register cars. We have to prove proficiency to operate them. We are required to have insurance in the event we cause damage with them. It’s been that way for decades, and no one is “coming to take your car”. Making sure people have the barest minimum of responsibility doesn’t lead to loss. Fear of loss leads to fundraising and bullshit. It’s not rational.

4) My gun is a right that can’t be modified. Again, utter bullshit. You can’t own a howitzer unless the barrel is full of concrete. You can’t own a cannon manufactured in the last century. You can’t own a fully automatic weapon without a FFL. That’s why those things are rarely used in crimes. And all of that is based on an amendment to our constitution that can be changed if we as a country see fit to do so. We have changed amendments before and we will again. If you don’t understand that you need a history lesson and a dictionary.

Creating common sense laws that put speed bumps in the way of lunatics helps. Every time. Automobile licenses, speed limits, etc don’t end accidents, but they make them less frequent and less deadly. It’s a proven concept. The time for bullshit excuses is over. It’s time to step up and take responsibility. Fuck this stupidity.”

Leonidas Christian Mixon
