Sunday Morning Video: Gimme Shelter

In the wake of Woodstock, huge outdoor concerts were all the rage. The Rolling Stones show at Altamont was the anti-Woodstock, free love, peace, and all that hippie shit were in short supply there. It didn’t help matters that the Hell’s Angels did security there; sort of like giving an arsonist a can of gasoline. Anyhoo, here’s the Maylses Brothers’ classic Altamont documentary, Gimme Shelter: Continue reading Sunday Morning Video: Gimme Shelter

Sunday Morning Video: Chamber of Secrets

If you haven’t seen Argo yet, go today, it’s terrific even if the ending is Hollywoodized. In the flick, John Goodman plays real life makeup artist John Chambers. This episode of Hollywood Treasure (a show featuring movie collectible dealer and auctioneer Joe Maddalena) shows what happened to some of Chambers’ finest work. I only hope his heir isn’t kicking himself for not waiting to go to auction until after Argo’s release. Continue reading Sunday Morning Video: Chamber of Secrets

Sunday Morning Video: Muddy Waters and Johnny Winter Live In 1974

I saw Muddy Waters and Johnny Winter perform together on several occasions. It was visually exciting to see a tall Albino dude in a cowboy hat onstage with the King of the Delta Blues, McKinley Morganfield. Here’s an episode of Soundstage from back in the day. It’s really more of a Muddy set than a joint appearance but it still rocks. Continue reading Sunday Morning Video: Muddy Waters and Johnny Winter Live In 1974

Sunday Morning Video: The Theologians

My friend Michael Homan likes to make a short film every summer. He has struck again. He is, in fact, a bonda fide academic bible dude so this subject is natural fodder for his quirky pastime. I’m not even embarrassed to admit that I know everyone in the flick. I should be but I’m not. Here’s Homan’s description of The Theologians: The Theologians, Drs. Michael Homan (Alpha) and Mark Gstohl (Omega), drive around New Orleans in a white Catalina verifying miracles. In this premiere episode (entitled Gumbo Madonna), the Cherub sells out some Babylonian Tiamat-worshipping Satanists for a trinity of … Continue reading Sunday Morning Video: The Theologians

Sunday Morning Video: Houdini and Spiritualism

Adrastos trivia time: I am obsessed with Harry Houdini, the greatest magician of all time and one of the founders of modern show biz. Here’s a clip from a documentary about spiritualism discussing Houdini’s efforts to debunk that bunkum. Why? Because it was bunk, not to be confused with Bunk Moreland: Whilst looking for a Houdini video, I learned that Aaron Sorkin is writing the book for a musical about the handcuff king due to open on Broadway next year: Continue reading Sunday Morning Video: Houdini and Spiritualism

Sunday Morning Video: True Love Travels On A Gravel Road

Dr. A and I went to a party at a friend’s hunting and fishing camp yesterday. It’s only 50 miles from Adrastos World HQ but seems like another world to a city boy like me. It had all the comforts of home and we essentially ate all afternoon. The only way we roughed it was traveling on a gravel road. Hence, this week’s SMV: Continue reading Sunday Morning Video: True Love Travels On A Gravel Road

Sunday Morning Video: Thick As A Brick

Music geeks like me have been known to obsess out in listening to our favorite artists. Rodney Crowell provided the soundtrack for my Katrina exile and this time it was Jethro Tull. I was already in the midst of that obsession so why the hell not? Longtime reader and commenter Joejoejoe recently said that he thought that a Tull 8-track provides the soundtrack for the Crack Van. Since I missed the van and its tacky shag rug, here’s a bit of live Brickfeaturing a classic intro by Ian Anderson. You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll rock: Continue reading Sunday Morning Video: Thick As A Brick
