Obama & the Olympics

As is usual for a Democrat, he can’t win. If he’d refused to go lobby personally and Chicago lost out (as was likely given that people here don’t like the idea of paying a bazillion dollars for a party for the rich when the city can’t pay its own workers) then the loss would have been his fault. Since he went, and Chicago lost out, it’s that he wasn’t persuasive enough or that his presidential penis was too small or something. Given that it was a lose-lose, why not go and say nice things about where you live when you’re … Continue reading Obama & the Olympics

From The Department Of Get The Fuck Over Yourself

That’s a baby pudu. It’s so cute, it makes a kitten look like a pile of crap. I led off with that picture because, well, why the fuck not? Also, I’m here to talk about something that bugs the fuck out of me, so I thought I’d start with something cute. A few weeks ago, I drove down to Chicago with some friends. A, I’m sorry that I didn’t come by for further orders on how to corrupt the youth with homosexuality, socialism, and LOLcats, but I hope that you’ll forgive me when I tell you what I was doing. … Continue reading From The Department Of Get The Fuck Over Yourself

Friday Ferretblogging: Wrasslin’ Edition

Dingo Smackdown Fall ’09: Puck vs. Bucky! Place your bets, gentlemen and ladies! They do this all morning long. Usually Bucky starts it but sometimes Puck avenges some slight from the day before and just races across the room to pile-drive his brother, and then it’s all tugging on ears and passive-aggressively rolling around next to each other and flicking tails in one another’s faces all “I’m not touching you! I’m not touching you! I’m not touching you!” A. Continue reading Friday Ferretblogging: Wrasslin’ Edition

It’s Just the World That’s Failed

Steve points out that today was an excellent day to slip one by the press in Chicago, which was busy with the EPIC OLYMPIC FAIL and ZOMG IS OBAMA FINISHED NAO? and WHY DON’T YOU LOVE US IOC and other such stuff that has no consequence to anyone who will miss a meal because the games went to Rio. Problem is, it’s always a good time to slip something by. Whether it’s a missing middle-class woman or a sports star saying something stupid or a politician having sex or a revolutionary new liposuction treatment or hey, maybe Oprah or John … Continue reading It’s Just the World That’s Failed

Malaka Of The Week: David Vitter

Yeah, I know Vitter is overqualified for this dishonor: he’s awful enough to be malaka of the year, decade or century. The worst thing is that the arrogant bastard is one of *my* Senators. I’ve hated Vitter since he was an overweening, obnoxious insufferably self-righteous conservative goo-goo state legislator. In fact, to know Vitter is to loathe him. That’s why they had to produce ads in 2004 showing that his kids liked him because nobody else does. No one. Why do you think he needs to pay for nookie? He’s a malaka with many nicknames: Vitty-Cent, the Sinning Senator and … Continue reading Malaka Of The Week: David Vitter

Friday Catblogging: Carnival Throws Edition

Dr. A and I love Carnival. It’s the time of the year when we like to entertain because we’re near the parade route. The big event at Adrastos World Headquarters is the Muses parade and half the city seems to come to our party. Muses is an all woman krewe with satirical themes and cool throws. We’re not the only ones wholove Muses, young Della Street is particularly fond of the fuzzy spears they throw from their floats: Sometimes Della even lets big brother Oscar join in the fun but he’s too mature to do more than pose: Continue reading Friday Catblogging: Carnival Throws Edition

The best money they didn’t spend

I ran across this while trolling some student media sites and found myself wondering if Joseph Heller ever considered writing about student newspapers. The gist of the story is that a pro-life group tried to run a 12-page insert in a number of college papers around the state of Wisconsin. A number of them ran the insert while two papers decided against it. In looking at what ad rates tend to be for inserts in these types of papers, the papers were likely to make about $200-$600 if the group bought inserts for their whole press run, depending on the … Continue reading The best money they didn’t spend

Alan Grayson for King of Everything

I love it when you call me Big Poppa: In other words, the bill could plausibly defund the entire military-industrial complex. Whoops. Rep. Alan Grayson (D-Fla.) picked up on the legislative overreach and asked the Project on Government Oversight (POGO) to sift through its database to find which contractors might be caught in the ACORN net. Lockheed Martin and Northrop Gumman both popped up quickly, with 20 fraud cases between them, andthe longer listis a Who’s Who of weapons manufacturers and defense contractors. The language was written by the GOP and filed as a “motion to recommit” in the House, … Continue reading Alan Grayson for King of Everything

Proud To Be A Saints Fan

And not just because they’re 3-0 and kicking ass. Saints Linebacker Scott Fujita did an interview withDave Zirin of The Nation and spoke out in support of marriage equality and of the Baltimore Ravens Brendan Ayanbadejo who wrote ablog post on the issue: Scott Fujita, defensive captain of the New Orleans Saints, supports Ayanbadejo’s stance. “I hope he’s right in his prediction, and I hope even more that it doesn’t take that long. People could look at this issue without blinders on…the blinders imposed by their church, their parents, their friends or, in our case, their coaches and locker rooms. … Continue reading Proud To Be A Saints Fan

Science is real. Just ask one of those nice atheists over there with the dinosaur bones

First there was this: Five things that would make atheists seem nicer linked to byPZ, who of course quite gracefully pissed all over it: I especially appreciate the word “seem,” because Lord knows there’s nothing that could make usactually nice, and obviously we need the suggestions of a Christian, since we’re all such not-nice people. I should make a counter-list of “five things that would make Christians seem intelligent” That begatthis. All of which I can only reply to with this: And don’t missthis. Orthis. H/T toforgetomori for the post on TMBG’s newHere Comes Science. —– Continue reading Science is real. Just ask one of those nice atheists over there with the dinosaur bones

The Sun Sets On Labour

It’s party conference season in the United Kingdom and the governing Labour Party just had its annual confab in Brighton. The mood of the party was even gloomier than the visage of its somber leader, Prime Minister Gordon Brown. The PM tried to give an upbeat speech but his lack of charisma and the party’s electoral problems resulted in moreyawns than kudos. The Conservatives have been on the comeback trail ever since picking the youthful, moderate and telegenic David Cameron as leader. Sound familiar? Think of him as Tony Blair lite. The Tories are finally living down their reputation as … Continue reading The Sun Sets On Labour

When Mad Men Turned Into a Peckinpah Film

I’ve avoided blogging aboutMad Menbecause I don’t want to have to slap the spoiler label on everything. This clip, however, comes from episode 6, which aired on September 20th so it’s almost as spoiled as the contents of my refrigerator when I returned from Katrina exile. So, I’ll just drag it out to the virtual curb for the whole frakking world to see. Anyway, Mad Men is such a subtle show that the presence of a riding mower and a blood splatter worthy ofSam Peckinpah either tickled my fancy or floated my boat, I’m not quite sure which: http://c.brightcove.com/services/viewer/federated_f8/1119352258 Continue reading When Mad Men Turned Into a Peckinpah Film

People in Glass (Whore) Houses…

From2Millionth Web Log It’d be nice ifDiaper Dave‘s recent opportunistic rants about ACORN were the political equivalent of a garden rake to the forehead. One can always hope. It’s unfortunate that it’s taken this long for anyone to do something like this, Loosiana’s alleged lax morality notwithstanding (note: that’s more myth than fact, even in New Orleans, though the city, like all cities, has a tendency towards tolerance, at least relative to its surroundings.) Anyway, it’s good to compare and contrast Vitter’s case with that of ACORN, which Rachel Maddow did last night. Vitter committed a crime. And, come to … Continue reading People in Glass (Whore) Houses…
