GOP Logic: UW spending money is bad, but saving is worse

“It’s not how much you make. It’s how much you save.” This was the edict my great-grandfather passed down to my father and the one my father gave to me. Dad recalled the story at least once a month when I was living at home. Each time, he told it, I listened as if I had never heard it before, mainly because the story was so honest and truthful. As a young man, he had just gone to visit great-grandpa after being paid for some summer work. “I was telling him how much I made and how great it was … Continue reading GOP Logic: UW spending money is bad, but saving is worse

Scott Walker, Precipitating Factor

As I battled a hangover and tried to make sense of what happened Tuesday night, I started to worry less about Governor Deadeyes and more about what really might be happening here.I argued about this time last year that if the Dems were going to come for the king, they’d best not miss. And boy, did we miss… The numbers revealed that even with massive turnout and massive outrage about Walker’s tactics, the election was no different than it was in 2010. In fact, Tom Barrett lost by a wider percentage this time than he did last time. The people … Continue reading Scott Walker, Precipitating Factor

Everyone Must Get Screwed

So apparently today is Be Extra Stupid today.Glad I found out about that before I went into the office: Act 10 came up in the first question of the night. Asked whether it had been good for the state, and whether he would do it again, Fitzgerald replied that it had been necessary to “claw back” from a place where unions held too much power and public employees had been insulated from the economic downturn. Right. Because it’s only fair that people who have not been cheated out of the kind of middle-class life that used to be the norm … Continue reading Everyone Must Get Screwed

Make All Those Mean Recalls Go AWAAAAAAAY

Covering a Story That Won’t Die is difficult. It’s exhausting. Day in, day out, talking to the same people about the same stuff all the time, trying to find something — anything — new to say about the same issues, getting calls from the same six pissed off people no matter what you do … it’s worse than just about anything. Other than having your rights and working dignity stripped away, hearing your reasonable compensation blamed for financial catastrophes not of your making, and being vilified for the unpardonable sins of teaching schoolchildren to read and mopping the floors of … Continue reading Make All Those Mean Recalls Go AWAAAAAAAY

Everybody Still Hates Scott

He’s spending money hand over fist, and yet the state still overridingly considers him a bag with which one douches: In January, Walker’s job approval was 51 percent; in March, it was 50 percent; and this month, it’s 47 percent. In January, Walker was leading Barrett 50-44; in March, 47-45; and this month, he trails 46-47. (Among likely voters, Walker leads by a point; all of these findings suggest a mostly unchanging dead heat.) “There’s been a great deal of advertising in the state, especially from the Walker campaign and Republican supporters, and we’ve seen virtually no movement in the … Continue reading Everybody Still Hates Scott

My sign penis is bigger than your sign penis

Signs involving the recall of Scott Walker are nothing new out here in Cheeseland. Some conservatives would argue these signs were being printed as election results rolled in that night in November 2010. However, with the recall finally in full swing, I’ve noticed an interesting phenomenon regarding the signs and their placement. The “Recall Walker” signs have been in full bloom for months and range in color from green and white to blue and red. The bumper stickers are everywhere and are orange, white, blue and more. However, these are all about the size you’d expect: 11 x 17-ish yard … Continue reading My sign penis is bigger than your sign penis

There are No Voting Problems, Everything’s Fine!

My old hometown paper, opining that it’s totally okay to take away people’s rights if it doesn’t seem like a major inconvenience or anything: According to clerks, there were more problems with redistricting, which changed the voting place for many voters. They were sent to their new polling spots — which should last them for another decade until the next census. But the quiet first test of voter ID here hasn’t quelled the opposition to it — the lawsuit to overturn it continues and there is a Milwaukee rally this weekend with the title: “Own Your Vote.” In testimony for … Continue reading There are No Voting Problems, Everything’s Fine!

What We Can Afford

This one burns a little hotter than all the other rage-inducing hippie-punching poor-hating nonsense coming out of Wisconsin’s legislature on a daily basis: In the Wisconsin Legislative session of 2009-2010, a bill passed both the Senate and Assembly providing health insurance to the families of firefighters killed in the line of duty. For reasons unknown to me, police officers were not included in this legislation. However, in May of 2011, a bipartisan effort led by Republican Senator Van Wanggaard and Democratic Senator Bob Jauch sought to remedy this. Senate Bill 18 added the health insurance protection to the surviving spouses … Continue reading What We Can Afford
