Oh, now this should be fun. Chimpy will be making a fundraising swing through Florida today and his handlers have reversed course and decided not tostiff-arm Katherine Harris. President Bush will sweep through Orlando today in the powerful role of fundraiser-in-chief for Republican gubernatorial candidate Charlie Crist and the state GOP, kick-starting the party on its drive to raise a record $30 million for the November election. Dating Dealbreakers

I like this topic. When I was single, it was always if he was an asshole to the waitress (or waiter). People are always saying if you want to see how a man really is look at how he treats his mother. Bullshit. Every man I know, even the dicks, is nice to his mom. It’s how he treats someone who he could perceive as inferior to him; does he take advantage of her reliance on him for tips and show off like a big man, being abusive because he thinks she can’t fight back? I grew up spending a … Continue reading Dating Dealbreakers

Getting Weirder than “Nixon’s Play”

Allen’s mother says she concealed her Jewish heritage from Georgie up until late August. FromWaPo… She said Allen asked her directly about his Jewish heritage when he was in Los Angeles for a fundraiser. “We sat across the table and he said, ‘Mom, there’s a rumor that Pop-pop and Mom-mom were Jewish and so were you,’ ” she recalled, a day after Allen issued a statement acknowledging and embracing his Jewish roots as he campaigns for a second term in the U.S. Senate. At the table in Palos Verdes, Calif., Allen’s mother, who is 83, said she told her son … Continue reading Getting Weirder than “Nixon’s Play”

Man I Was Mean, But I’m Changing My Scene

Assistance Mission in Iraq. More than 20,600 Iraqi civilians have died in attacks so far this year, according to UNAMI. Residents Protest No Water in Lower 9th Ward

Ray Nagin made some political hay with anannouncement just weeks before the mayoral election that Lower 9th Ward residents could begin to return home as the water was now safe. And almost 5 months later… Residents of the Lower Ninth Ward are unhappy that they don’t have drinkable water yet and may not for a while. Several people protested at the Sewerage and Water Board Wednesday, saying that the inability to get quality drinking water is preventing their return. “We can’t get trailers. We can’t start working on our homes,” shouted Gwen Adam, a Lower Nine resident. Mayor Nagin said … Continue reading Residents Protest No Water in Lower 9th Ward

What Would The Clenis Do?

Latest column, riffing on an Insight piece Holden brought to our attention recently: A useful exercise: if the idea that the Bush administration is considering withdrawing troops, but only after the U.S. midterm elections, doesn’t give you pause to consider whether such a move might have political considerations behind it, substitute “Clinton” for “Bush” in that sentence and try reading it again. You can hear the howls of outrage from the editorial patriot guard now, can’t you? Politicizing warfare. Putting his electoral fortunes and those of his party above the interests of national security. Undermining our brave men and women … Continue reading What Would The Clenis Do?

St. Rita’s Nursing Home Owners Indicted

FromTimes Picayune A St. Bernard Parish grand jury has indicted the owners of a nursing home where 35 people died during flooding from Hurricane Katrina. Mabel and Salvador Mangano were indicted on 35 counts of negligent homicide and 64 counts of cruelty to the infirm, authorities said. The Manganos were arrested last year after authorities said they were responsible for the deaths at St. Rita’s Nursing Home near Poydras because they failed to evacuate the patients ahead of the storm. The Manganos argue that to evacuate the elderly residents would have been dangerous since they were already frail and in … Continue reading St. Rita’s Nursing Home Owners Indicted

We’ll Know Soon Enough

TheRed Cross intends to visit the 14 detainees recently trasferred from the CIA’s gulags to Guantanamo Bay. Although the Red Cross typically does not release information gleaned from these meetings, nor do they publicize their criticisms of prsions around the world, the organization will facilitate communication between the detainees and their families. That’s how we will learn just how badly they have been tortured over the past several years. The Red Cross expects to meet for the first time 14 high-level terrorism suspects who were recently transferred from CIA secret prisons to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, at a visit to the … Continue reading We’ll Know Soon Enough

War Crimes, Bitches!

I’ve beenbeating the war crimesdrum lately because it is obvious to me that George Bush has violated theWar Crimes Act of 1996. Last night George Washington Consitutional Law ProfessorJonathan Turley was on Keith Olbermann’sCountdown on MSNBC where they discussed the subject. I added the emphasis. OLBERMANN: Last Friday here, you were telling us thatsome of the detainees from the secret CIA cells, when moved to Guantanamo, might have the opportunity in the immediate future to talk to the Red Cross about their own interrogations. Is there anything more on the possibility that, that, that‘s going to happen and thatwhich might … Continue reading War Crimes, Bitches!

Go read this post from Schroeder atPeople Get Ready on gutting a fellow NOLA blogger’s home… Wanna know what it feels like? You can’t really, until you see all of your possessions covered in mud and mold. But let’s just say you’re sitting at a desk in your home reading this post. Think of filthy water rising to a level just above your head. Now, everything from from your head on down is ruined and lost forever. What do you have hanging on your walls? What’s in your drawers? What’s on your bookshelves? What of irreplaceable sentimental value will you … Continue reading Sunken Treasure

Testing Pakistani Patience

Musharef (who, btw, is meeting with the Chimp today) may go along withshit like this but I doubt that the overwhelming majority of Pakistanis will for long. Six US helicopters ‘intruded’ into North Waziristan Agency, ‘violating’ Pakistan’s air space, Dawn newspaper reported quoting officials and local residents. This is the first such report since the Pakistan government signed an agreement with the tribal chiefs of Waziristan two weeks ago to stop all military operation in the area, indicating increased pace of action by the US military. In a report from Miramshah, the region’s principal city, the newspaper quoted eyewitnesses that … Continue reading Testing Pakistani Patience

Frustrated Little Boy

Chimpy seems to be running out of patience waiting for Iraqi PM Nuri al-Maliki toproduce a few miracles. [D]iplomats who deal with the Bush administration on Iraq issues, and recently departed officials who stay in contact with their colleagues in the government, say the president’s top advisers have a far more pessimistic view. “The thing you hear the most is that [Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Kamal al-Maliki] never makes any decisions,” said a former senior official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss internal deliberations. “And that drives Bush crazy. He doesn’t take well … Continue reading Frustrated Little Boy

Not Fooling Anyone

I don’t understand why Chimpy is wasting everyone’s time at the UN. If his speech yesterday was desinged for public consumption then few saw it, there was nothing new in it, and his usual, plodding, semi-literate delivery would not excite anyone with half a brain and a pulse over 20 beats per minute. If his speech was aimed at the people of the Middle East it was yet anothermiserable failure. Arab commentators have dismissed US President George W. Bush’s appeal for democracy directly to the people of the region as a patronising and doomed effort to give a new face … Continue reading Not Fooling Anyone

Freepers on the UN Address

Link, should you choose to venture there: [Before the speech begins] …I’m going to listen to Rush for a bit..be better than this nonsense. Amazing the growth of this President. Sober, serious, wise. This is a heartfelt speech. Bush is sticking it to the leaders of the Muslim world! I hope a cd comes out after his final term that gives his best speeches – I’m sure this one will be among them! Poland’s speech will be great, as well. They are wonderful allies to us. Godspeed to this president; we’ll never have another like him. Oh, Freepers. May you … Continue reading Freepers on the UN Address

Scientists: Move the Mississippi

From theNYT Scientists have long said the only way to restore Louisiana’s vanishing wetlands is to undo the elaborate levee system that controls the Mississippi River, not with the small projects that have been tried here and there, but with a massive diversion that would send the muddy river flooding wholesale into the state’s sediment-starved marshes. And most of them have long dismissed the idea as impractical, unaffordable and lethal to the region’s economy. Now, they are reconsidering. In fact, when a group of researchers convened last April to consider the fate of the Louisiana coast, their recommendation was unanimous: … Continue reading Scientists: Move the Mississippi

A Texas Chimp in King Arthur’s Court: Athenae & Tena Liveblogging

DAMN these midday speeches. Don’t these people know tequila shooters at this hour are bad for your health?

Tena’s in bold. I’m in a brown sweater and jeans, in case you were wondering.

The general assembly president is warning people not to engage in vigorous congratulations after speeches. I don’t think we’ll have to worry much about that here.

I wonder about the security – he’s so famously chickenshit.

Polite applause as Bush takes the podium.

He’s looking all statesman-y, today, but he’s slurring a bit.

He’s got a full-on smirk today. Bringing the Sept. 11. “Enemies of humanity?” Wow, irony may not be dead but hyperbole just keeled over. “It is clear that the world is engaged in a great ideological struggle.” He’s got such a polar mind. There are terrorists in the world, and then there are moderate people. That’s it.

Campaign of murder? That’s you, W, that’s you motherfucker.

Seriously. “This peaceful world can be ours if we seek it and if we work together.” Work together? Does he listen to himself? Human rights? I mean … I don’t even know what to do with this. There’s stony silence. “A bright future starting to take root in the Middle East.” Is that what the kids are calling murder and violence these days?

Universal Declaration of Human Rights – that should burn your goddamn tongue to say, W.

5 years ago Iraq’s seat was occupied by a dictator who killed his citizens, invaded his neighbors … Now it’s occupied by us, and we kill its citizens and invade its neighbors. America! Fuck yeah!

Moderation – again. Is this a Repug campaign speech? He’s doing that Moderation Dance again.

Democracy in Iraq- yeah, they are democratically torturing everyone.

Your Monday Morning Republican Juggernaut Update

My, everything must be going really poorly for a girl to bedumped by Ken Mehlman, right? When Charlie Crist won Florida’s gubernatorial primary, the Republican National Committee dashed off a note of congratulations and posted it on the party Web site. “Charlie Crist,” wrote Chairman Ken Mehlman, “has the character and credentials to successfully lead Florida as Governor.” Mehlman did the same for 10 other GOP congressional and gubernatorial candidates. But U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris, once a rising Republican star, got nothing. In fact, her victory in the Senate primary wasn’t mentioned by the RNC or the National Republican Senatorial … Continue reading Your Monday Morning Republican Juggernaut Update

Powell Explains Himself — A Bit

I don’t know if it is conscience that drives a man like Colin Powell or a desire to rehabilitate himself with an eye on a future presidential campaing, but either way he issticking to his guns on the immorality of Chimpy’s torture fetish. Former secretary of state Colin L. Powell said yesterday that he decided to publicly oppose the Bush administration’s proposed rules for the treatment of terrorism suspects in part because the plan would add to growing doubts about whether the United States adheres to its own moral code. “If you just look at how we are perceived in … Continue reading Powell Explains Himself — A Bit

Lamont And Lieberman A Dead Heat

Rasmussen has a new Lamont-Lieberman poll out. Lieberman 45% (-1) Lamont 43% (+2) Margin of Error: +/- 4.5% Note that a MOE of +/-4.5% is relatively large, back in the day when I did customer satisfaction surveys for the State of Texas we were required to achieve an MOE of +/-3%. This is one of the reasons many of us are skeptical of Rasmussen’s polling. That said, let’s see who the poll says is supporting these two men. “Most GOP voters, 62%, prefer Lieberman, who also attracts 27% of Democrats. Lamont attracts support from 69% of Democrats.” Continue reading Lamont And Lieberman A Dead Heat
