Who Will Speak Up for Christianity in an Age of Rampant Girl-on-Girl?

If only it had a champion, such as the Tribune’s John Kass: I’m not opposed to same-sex unions. Americans have the right to equal protection under the law, and same-sex couples should be able to expect the same tax benefits and other considerations allowed to those of us who are now being called, in some quarters, “opposite-sex couples.” As far as I’m concerned, Americans have the right to do as they please as long as they don’t infringe upon the rights of others. America is all about liberty and freedom. But this all comes now during the season of Lent, … Continue reading Who Will Speak Up for Christianity in an Age of Rampant Girl-on-Girl?

Traditional Procreative Concept

Start breeding or get divorced, ladies: Attorney Charles Cooper, the former Reagan administration official arguing in support of Proposition 8, stressed that recognizing same-sex marriages would “sever (marriage’s) abiding connection with its traditional procreative context.” In turn, Justice Elena Kagan countered with the example of elderly couples and others who marry, despite being past child-rearing age. “There are lots of people that get married that can’t have children,” Breyer added. Yeah, but they’re not REAL families. They’re not families with 2.5 kids and a dog and a white picket fence. They’re not families with soccer practices and PTA meetings. They’re … Continue reading Traditional Procreative Concept

Deep Standing Thought

I’m putting on my Carnac hat and making a prediction on today’s Prop 8 case. The Supremes will find that the appellants didn’t have standing (status) to sue and more or less affirm the lower Court’s ruling by indirection. That means that my friends in California can get gay married once a decision comes down. A broader ruling was never in the cards on that case but Justice Kennedy clearly showed his pro-gay sympathies and Scalia showed that he thinks Strom Thurmond was one fertile elderly motherfucker. Tomorrow’s DOMA case is the big enchilada. Continue reading Deep Standing Thought

Ladies, Listen Closely

Because if you don’t, you might miss something: For example, the RNC concludes that Republican candidates must connect with women voters using “softer language,” fewer “graphs and charts” and by assembling a strong list of female surrogates to do media appearances. That’s right. Republicans conclude that to win women voters they must use their “inside” voice and not bombard those ladybrains with all that “information.” Oh, and rather than actually place women in positions of leadership within the party, they plan to just pluck a few pretty faces to put in front of the cameras. Right. Has nothing to do … Continue reading Ladies, Listen Closely

Portmania: The Next Generation

Will Portman wrote a piece for the Yale Daily News about coming out, which was republished by the Guardian. Here’s the money quote: The following summer, the summer of 2012, my dad was under consideration to be Gov Romney’s running mate. The rest of my family and I had given him the go-ahead to enter the vetting process. My dad told the Romney campaign that I was gay, that he and my mom were supportive and proud of their son, and that we’d be open about it on the campaign trail. When he ultimately wasn’t chosen for the ticket, I … Continue reading Portmania: The Next Generation

Kissing Cousins?

This could prove to be an interesting test of my personal experience theory: Jean Podrasky, 48, a lesbian who wants to marry her partner, will be at Tuesday’s U.S. Supreme Court hearing on Proposition 8 in seating reserved for family members and guests of Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. “I am so excited,” said Podrasky, an accountant and the first cousin of the chief justice on his mother’s side. “I feel quite honored and overwhelmed.” Roberts is a conservative appointed by President George W. Bush in 2005. Podrasky, who is more liberal, said she rooted for his nomination to … Continue reading Kissing Cousins?

North Dakota’s Anti-Woman Dystopian Horror Show

Yo, North Dakota. You’ve got a problem. Abig one. You’re a state full of bohunk, testosterone-fueled oil workers desperate for some female companionship. And your state legislature is treating women like slaves. Like objects. So, how’s that working for you, North Dakota? Let’s discuss. First of all, two bills banning abortion await the Governor of North Dakota’s signature today [UPDATE:they were signed into law by the governor today]. One bans abortion for all fetal abnormalities… … such as anencephaly in which parts of the brain and skull don’t form, or Tay-Sachs disease, a degenerative condition that paralyzes babies and typically … Continue reading North Dakota’s Anti-Woman Dystopian Horror Show

I Wonder What This Could Mean

The suburbs don’t want to “subsidize” the city: Service consolidation has been a popular topic for local government, but the notion of a metropolitan form of government has sparked controversy. “Metropolitan government is tough,” Glendale Mayor Jerome Tepper said. “We have 20 municipalities including the county. People identify with their community” and some don’t want to give that up, he said. Rob Henken, president of the nonpartisan Public Policy Forum, said the controversial part about metro government in Milwaukee would be concerns from suburban communities that they would be subsidizing “much more intense levels of service in the city.” Right. … Continue reading I Wonder What This Could Mean

Happy Kerry Photo

THIS MAH BIG PLANE. In Iraq, we are apparently vaguely disappointed to not be blowing it up anymore: Mr. Kerry’s visit to Iraq on Sunday was the first by an American secretary of state since 2009. He came at a time when concerns are growing over Iraq’s role in the crisis in Syria, and when the United States’ influence in Iraq has been dwindling. The State Department has been sharply reducing its huge presence here, and its diplomats have seemed powerless to affect the course of events on two of Washington’s pressing concerns: Iraqi tolerance for the Iranian weapons shipments … Continue reading Happy Kerry Photo

What You Gonna Do When They Come For You?

The answer is “take on the Iranian invasion with a busted-ass AK you don’t know how to operate that you bought at a gun shop with bars on the windows, like if the guns are such great protection what do you need to up-armor the glass for,” Alex: Dobbs quickly agreed, adding, “we’re told by Homeland Security that there are already agents of Al Qaeda here working in this country. Why in the world would you not want to make certain that all American citizens were armed and prepared? “ If only there was an organization, or perhaps several organizations, … Continue reading What You Gonna Do When They Come For You?

Anthony Lewis, R.I.P.

Anthony Lewis was the first national newspaper columnist I remember reading. His column at the New York Times ran from 1969 to 2001 and he was usually right and always lucid and thoughtful, no MoDo-style gotcha bullshit for Tony Lewis. He died today at the age of 85. Lewis was widely credited with revolutionizing coverage of the Supremes and wrote 2 great books about the Warren Court and some of its landmark cases:Gideon’s Trumpet and Make No Law. It’s a pity that most folks in the MSM nowadays lack Lewis’ common decency and reporting skills. The fact that the NYT has … Continue reading Anthony Lewis, R.I.P.

The Way We Were

I never watch “Morning Joe” but Mr. Beale does and I happened to be in the bedroom long enough this morning to catch a truly horrible “both sides did it,” context-free, Iraq War dodge. It featured clips of prominent Democrats (John Kerry, Hillary Clinton, Carl Levin) calling Saddam Hussein a “brutal, murderous dictator” who needed to be disarmed, followed by clips of those same individuals criticizing Bush’s war later. As if that proved something. As if that meant anything. As if saying Saddam was a dangerous asshole also meant you wanted to invade his country and kill his people. As … Continue reading The Way We Were
