FUCKIN’ MERICA: Mitchell asked, “You have an anti-homosexual law Uganda. And now Arizona is looking into whether it will allow gays and lesbians into restaurants. Doesn’t this show other countries how we feel about homosexuality in our states?” Kerry responded that he was “counting on” Brewer to make the right decision on the bill. “I cannot imagine how the law would withstand the scrutiny of the Supreme Court of the United States,” Kerry said. “So I would hope that she’ll make the right decision.” Kerry added that “this is not an easy path for the United States. But what’s important … Continue reading Happy Kerry Photo

Album Cover Art Wednesday: Peter Gabriel 3

The album is just called Peter Gabriel but since PG did the same thing twice before it was confusing as hell. The fabulous cover by Hipgnosis, however, gave this great 1980 LP its lasting nickname: Melt. PG3 is my favorite Gabriel solo album. It merged the somewhat poppier style from his first solo LP with his hardcore prog work with Genesis. And the merger/marriage was a great success artistically. PG’s commercial break through took a bit longer, but this album contains some of his best songs including The Intruder, Not One Of Us, Family Snapshot, and I Don’t Remember.Melt also … Continue reading Album Cover Art Wednesday: Peter Gabriel 3

‘Hey Dickless!’

This is the best story ever: PARKER JR.: If I died tomorrow, there would probably be a blip on the news [referring to me as] the guy who came up with “who you gonna call.” WEAVER: Suddenly, everyone knew who I was. Kids would come up to me and say, “Did you really turn into a dog?” RAMIS: Teachers were writing me saying, “Kids were playing Ghostbusters in playgrounds, and it was very good. It wasn’t about one set of kids versus another like cowboys and Indians. They were working together fighting evil spirits.” AYKROYD: People in the paranormal field … Continue reading ‘Hey Dickless!’

Did Russell Crowe Lose a Bet?

Every time I see a preview for Noah, I assume it’s a parody, like that Jack Reacher thing (that was a parody, right?), but then again: How did Russell Crowe spend his weekend? By asking the pope to go see his new movie “Noah,” of course. The star of the upcoming biblical epic sent a few tweets pleading with Pope Francis to go see the bold retelling of Noah’s Ark. Russell Crowe has, of course, been in a ton of total crap as well as Cinderella Man and Master & Commander, so it’s not like his record is unblemished. STILL. … Continue reading Did Russell Crowe Lose a Bet?

Programming isn’t a gendered activity

Also known as THE WIMMINS ARE TAKING OVAR and I have zero problem with this: That girls are bad at STEM (science, technology, math and engineering) subjects is a pervasive and harmful stereotype that remains far too common today. But in an introductory computer science class at UC Berkeley last spring women outranked men in enrollment — there were 106 women and 104 men — for the first time. Yes, the numbers are subtle, but they indicate a growing trend of women and girls asserting themselves in a field largely dominated by men. The percentage of female computer science majors … Continue reading Programming isn’t a gendered activity

And the Hits Just Keep on Comin’

Wisconsin, you are hard to love these days: The Wisconsin state Assembly approved a bill 56 to 37 Thursday eliminating local living wage mandates for Madison and Milwaukee workers. Assembly Bill 750, introduced by Rep. Chris Kapenga, R-Delafield, overrides local mandates setting a living wage for government workers and contractors and prohibits residency requirements for laborers, workers, mechanics and truck drivers working on local projects for the public. Living wage is defined as pay high enough for employees to support themselves. Wisconsin law currently prevents city officials from creating a local living wage mandate unless the employee works for the … Continue reading And the Hits Just Keep on Comin’

Rudeness Is In

Remember when Americans respected the office of the Presidency even when one disagreed with the current occupant? It’s increasingly difficult to remember those bygone days with a Republican Party that has Ted Nugent on the campaign trail in Texas. I don’t expect civility from extremist yahoos like a washed-up loin-cloth wearing rocker such as the Nuge but I do expect it from my own Governor: The nation’s governors emerged from a meeting with President Barack Obama on Monday claiming harmony, only to immediately break into an on-camera partisan feud in front of the West Wing. Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal lashed … Continue reading Rudeness Is In

You’re Paying Either Way

The anti-tax small-goverment teawads never do get this through their thick skulls: This is the most telling part of the article and helps show the damage really done by Act 10: Leah Lipska, the president of Local 1, scoffs at Mr. Walker’s famous suggestion that public employees are the “haves” in society, noting that many earn less than $35,000 a year. And the law, says Ms. Lipska, an information systems technician with the state corrections system, has made things much worse. “My family is now on food stamps,” said Ms. Lipska, a mother of three who earns $18.62 an hour. … Continue reading You’re Paying Either Way
