Today on Tommy T’s Obsession with the Freeperati – sordid sampler edition

OK, folks – time to spin that airlock wheel and enter the iso chamber of horrors. Don’t worry – it won’t hurt – much.

First up –for whom the bell trolls!

Bob Woodward trolled us

Twitter exploded last night, after Bob Woodward revealed that White
House official had warned him he would “regret” saying Obama had moved
the goal posts on sequestration.

Predictably, conservatives
latched onto this, as it confirmed our suspicion about the Obama
Administration’s “Chicago-style” of politics. A lot of mainstream
journalists bought into this, too — reflexively believing anything the
great Bob Woodward says.

Of course, Woodward (who was expert at
trolling for publicity before the internet even existed), benefits
greatly from the publicity (nothing sells books like controversy).

The best rube in the world? One who doesn’t realize he’s being fleeced.

To: Nachum; All

No, Woodward did not troll us.

What is being lost in all of this, is that Woodward got about a 30
minute earful from the White House, and that earful wasn’t whispered
sweet nothings, either.

And Lanny davis and Fournier have been on the receiving end, too.

Even after they just finish reading the rebuke, it still goes sailing right over their collective head.

I don’t think that it is the Chicago way, actually, I think it is Hillary’s revenge.

Watch all of those who are loyal to her line up against the Obamas.

The moral of the story is: never trust a left wing partisan hack.
He appeared to change his stripes, but that was so he could get some

Sour grapes Matt?

No. Just a sensible analysis of the facts.

When
I saw conservatives start to drool over Woodward, I suspected we were
being played.
He probably sold 10,000 books from people who wouldn’t
have considered it before his big “break” from the administration.

Newspapers Won’t Make It By Not Making It

I want to make out with Warren Buffett right now: Charlie and I believe that papers delivering comprehensive and reliable information to tightly-bound communities and having a sensible Internet strategy will remain viable for a long time. We do not believe that success will come from cutting either the news content or frequency of publication. Indeed, skimpy news coverage will almost certainly lead to skimpy readership. And the less-than-daily publication that is now being tried in some large towns or cities – while it may improve profits in the short term – seems certain to diminish the papers’ relevance over … Continue reading Newspapers Won’t Make It By Not Making It

Album Cover Art Wednesday: Weasels Ripped My Flesh

It’s hard to believe that cover art could live up to the title, Weasels Ripped My Flesh, but it does. This is the first Zappa/Mothers elpee cover that I’m posting but I suspect that it will not be the last: The LP itself is a bit of a mish-mash, somewhere in the middle of the Zappa canon. It’s most notable for the presence of future Little Feat frontman Lowell George in the band and for this tune: Continue reading Album Cover Art Wednesday: Weasels Ripped My Flesh

BAAAAAACK

*pokes head in door* Hi, guys! Tommy called me on the super-seekrit First Draft sat-phone and told me somebody tried to smuggle a komodo dragon into the crack van “to feng shui it,” and last he checked on Claire she was drinking Jude’s bong water while Doc fed Riot all the Doritos and peanut butter I was saving for my lunch. He also said Adrastos let some hippie camp in the yard. I assume that’s where the goat came from. I HOPE THAT’S WHERE THE GOAT CAME FROM. In all sincerity, thanks for your patience while I made a valiant … Continue reading BAAAAAACK

Deep Jindal Thought

I must admit that this post title is a genuine oxymoron. For a guy who wants the GOP to stop being the stupid party, PBJ spends most of his time swimming in the shallow end of the intellectual pool.Time to quote Dave Weigel quoting Politico quoting PBJ on the Voting Rights Act: “Unlike the Democratic Party, we’re not trying to divide the American people,” Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal said Monday when asked by POLITICO about the race-related and gay rights issues the court is tackling. “The reality is as Republicans we want to unify the country. … We don’t think … Continue reading Deep Jindal Thought

Better Call Saul!

(crossposted at driftglass blog) One of the predictable and hilarious side-effects of the Big Conservative Project to Destroy American has been that even the most proficient cookers and dealers of wingnut meth have started snorting/ shooting/ smoking/ pontificating their own product. And the results aren’t pretty. Not Pretty At All Which why the Right could not survive for a single day as a cohesive political and cultural force without their Very Serious Centrist enablers in the mainstream media. Because when you have fucked up as radically, frequently and publicly as Conservatives have, you don’t need a public defender: you need … Continue reading Better Call Saul!

Malaka Of The Week: Tim Graham

It’s been a big week for egregious malakatude. Tim Graham, director of something, something at the Malakatude Research Center is the 3rd candidate I’ve considered but he takes the cake. (From pie to cake in less than 24 hours. How do ya like dem apples?) I know very little about him other than, like most wingnuts, he “don’t know much about history, don’t know much biology,” which is why he wins the booby prize as malaka of the week. Graham not only put his foot in his mouth but he did so on the Tweeter Tubewhere he commented about Karen … Continue reading Malaka Of The Week: Tim Graham

Judge My Purchases In The Past Week, Please

In the past week, I have eaten at Taco Bell. I have purchased a pair of shoes I did not strictly need. And a bar of fancy soap I didn’t need at all. I went to see a movie (Silver Linings Playbook, stop whatever you’re doing and go). I paid $31 to park in a parking garage from hell downtown. Screw that place at Jackson and LaSalle, don’t ever park there. I kicked in $15 for a magazine subscription, and $3 to have some bagels around the house. I’m sure there have been other things, but I don’t think so. … Continue reading Judge My Purchases In The Past Week, Please

The “Get-The-Fuck-Over-It” Bowl

Over the years, we have had epic football games that have led to the greatest of nicknames. There was the Ice Bowl, the Blunder Bowland the Miracle Bowl, just to name a few. We’ve had the Bears Super Bowl Shuffling, we’ve had the Titans coming up one yard short and we’ve had the Browns… well… uh… Hey, we will always have 1964, right? As the length of time between the game and the end of the season has grown to a full two weeks of hype, we have seen more and more chances for the media to get excited about … Continue reading The “Get-The-Fuck-Over-It” Bowl

Men Suck, And It’s Your Fault, Ladies, Because of Babies

You know what has been missing from our discussions about ladies in the workplace? The perspective of a middle-aged white man who thinks bitches be trippin’ to have menz babies: Look, most grown men are still 12-year-old boys inside. Most men still expect their working spouse to assume responsibility for the household chores. Most men turn immediately to their wives when their kid has the sniffles (“you don’t expect me to miss work, do you?”). Most men raise their eyebrows and give each other a nudge when a good-looking girl appears at a meeting. We check out the way they’re … Continue reading Men Suck, And It’s Your Fault, Ladies, Because of Babies

For What It’s Worth

TPM ran a swell piece about the cover art of the NRA’s house organ (LaPierre is their swinging dick) America’s 1st Freedom. They were all pretty inflammatory from a lefty-commie-pinko-hippie-peacenik perspective but this one is my favorite: The New Black Panthers are coming to mau-mau your ass everyone. Btw, this qualifies as subtle from the NRA’s perspective. That black gloved fist is gonna grab your gun and we all know who’s wearing it, the Kenyan Marxist dude. This cover was published right before the election, and before Obama came out of the closet on gun control. He hadn’t done much … Continue reading For What It’s Worth

‘Facts Derived from Several Studies’

Apparently gay people have been on a citywide killing spree: Republican national committeeman Dave Agema’s post Wednesday, during U.S. Supreme Court oral arguments on same-sex marriage, was based on an online article titled, “Everyone Should Know These Statistics on Homosexuals,” which appeared under the byline Frank Joseph, M.D. The post depicts gay people as sexually promiscuous, rife with sexually transmitted diseases and responsible for “half the murders in large cities.” It cites 30-year-old studies for some of its statistics and sources such as the Congressional Record and special-interest groups for others. [snip] Agema of Grandville, a former state lawmaker who … Continue reading ‘Facts Derived from Several Studies’

Weekend Question Thread

What do you do to pass the time on long car rides? I can’t read or play games or even crochet in the car because I get violently ill. So when I was little and we took a lot of road trips we’d play license plate bingo or sing 99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall. My dad loved that last one. Nowadays I engage in healthy activities known as Yelling Along With Kelly Clarkson/Fun./Lady Gaga Songs and playing “what if we won the lottery” with Mr. A. A. Paragraph of the day

It comes from another hilarious piece by Salon’s Mary Elizabeth Williams, entitledGays hate apple pie: Let’s look at the evidence here regarding the homosexual relationship to pie. Anne Burrell does favorapple tarts over pies, and that does sound suspiciously French. And Art Smith’s Table 52 features pecan pie and chess pie, which seem pretty American but are obviously not Republican enough to keep America straight. But has Huelskamp seenCat Cora roll out a crust? I defy any heterosexual in America to surpass her technique. And Ted Allen did a wholeAll American, apple pie-themed episode of “Chopped”! In short, though I … Continue reading Paragraph of the day

Hey Look, It’s Entitled High School Me!

Seriously, I think I wrote something this snippy and spoiled in high school, but it’s still in my diary (I TOLD YOU TO BURN THAT, MOM) and not in the pages ofthe Wall Street Journal: Like me, millions of high-school seniors with sour grapes are asking themselves this week how they failed to get into the colleges of their dreams. It’s simple: For years, they—we—were lied to. Colleges tell you, “Just be yourself.” That is great advice, as long as yourself has nine extracurriculars, six leadership positions, three varsity sports, killer SAT scores and two moms. Then by all means, … Continue reading Hey Look, It’s Entitled High School Me!

Keep Annoying the Prigs, Holy Father

Happy Easter, stuck-up assholes: There were certainly none of those trappings on display Thursday at the Casal del Marmo juvenile detention facility in Rome, where the 76-year-old Francis got down on his knees to wash and kiss the feet of 12 inmates, two of them women. The rite re-enacts Jesus’ washing of the feet of his 12 apostles during the Last Supper before his crucifixion, a sign of his love and service to them. The church’s liturgical law holds that only men can participate in the rite, given that Jesus’ apostles were all male. Priests and bishops have routinely petitioned … Continue reading Keep Annoying the Prigs, Holy Father

Marriage Equality for Illinois

The conservative Chicago Tribune: Much of the opposition stems from religious concerns, such as those cited by Cardinal Francis George, who has urged a “no” vote. We fully understand and respect the cardinal’s view that same-sex marriage violates natural law. But nothing in this bill affects the church’s authority to define what is right for Catholics. It recognizes the difference between religious rites and civil institutions. The Catholic church, after all, bars remarriage by divorcees, but Illinois grants marriage licenses to them. Allowing same-sex marriage does not limit the freedom of religious believers to reject it; it merely allows those … Continue reading Marriage Equality for Illinois

How Kentucky Politics Is Like Justified

If you don’t watch the fabulous FX series, Justified, the post title sounds like it was like written by a valley girl, like wow. If you don’t watchJustified, what the hell is wrong with you? It’s in its 4th season and is based on a short story by Elmore Leonard, and stars the splendid Timothy Olyphant and Walton Goggins and his big scary choppers. It is set in Kentucky and much of the action is centered in Harlan County. There are some ruthless characters onJustified: murder, mayhem, betrayal to equalGame of Thrones. Say what?

If this hadn’t been published on Saturday I’d swear it was an April Fool’s gag: Sue Everhart, chairwoman of the Georgia Republican Party, told theMarietta Daily Journal in a story published Saturday that once gay nuptials are legally permitted, there will be nothing to stop a straight person from exploiting the system in order to claim marital benefits. “You may be as straight as an arrow, and you may have a friend that is as straight as an arrow,” Everhart said. “Say you had a great job with the government where you had this wonderful health plan. February 15, 2013 1:42 PM

In a Google hangout last evening, President Barack Obama explained
that his problem is that he’s “not the emperor of the United States”:

“This is something I’ve struggled with throughout my presidency,”
said Obama. “The problem is that I’m the president of the United States, I’m not
the emperor of the United States. My job is to execute laws that are passed.”
