If this hadn’t been published on Saturday I’d swear it was an April Fool’s gag:
Sue Everhart, chairwoman of the Georgia Republican Party, told theMarietta Daily Journal
in a story published Saturday that once gay nuptials are legally
permitted, there will be nothing to stop a straight person from
exploiting the system in order to claim marital benefits.
“You may be as straight as an arrow, and you may have a friend that
is as straight as an arrow,” Everhart said. “Say you had a great job
with the government where you had this wonderful health plan. I mean,
what would prohibit you from saying that you’re gay, and y’all get
married and still live as separate, but you get all the benefits? I just
see so much abuse in this it’s unreal. I believe a husband and a wife
should be a man and a woman, the benefits should be for a man and a
woman. There is no way that this is about equality. To me, it’s all
about a free ride.”
Uh, uh, uh, why wouldn’t they fake traditional marriage instead? I guess catching teh gay gives you a fraudster virus or some such shit…

What the … okay, so she saw this Adam Sandler movie about this, whatever the hell it was called, and thinks that … I can’t. Even.
And plenty of people do have insane conversations about getting married just for the benefits NOW, which is one of the reasons our health care system, and not marriage equality, is a fucking threat to America.
Once the US moves beyond the gay marriage controversy, and allows gay POLY marriages, then we can confidently expect large numbers of GOP legislators, lobbyists, pundits, and defense contractors to all get married in an enormous clusterfuck.
Not (mostly) for the hawt gey secks, but to avoid testifying against one another.
Uh, uh, uh, why wouldn’t they fake traditional marriage instead?
Because you’re a creepy men’s rights activist who can’t get a woman to talk to you for more than 5 minutes without her eyes widening as she backs away slowly?
Obviously she was traumatized by the cancellation of “Occasional Wife” when she was young:
My husband and I got married in 1987 precisely because he had great medical insurance and I was a student. We’re still married and frankly that’s a little surprising to both of us. Fortunately, we live in Canada now so medical insurance isn’t a problem for us.
“Pretend to be gay” is the basis for a film but I doubt it happens — even rarely — in real life.
That wasn’t the only crazy in her statement, too. Go to the Marietta Daily Journal article. She also said gay couples can’t get married because they don’t have “the equipment to have a sexual relationship.” Umm … yeah, alrighty then. Someone give this woman a video, please.
And then she also gave the usual “think of the children” tripe, that gay parents would “influence that child’s sexual orientation.” Which seems pretty weird since I think 99% of gay people had straight parents. So it certainly can’t be the parenting.
So much stupid in the Republican brain!!! Soooo much stupid Here in Tennessee our anti-Muslim Republican state senators have just now figured out that the school voucher program they’ve been hawking might actually apply to Muslim schools. THE HORROR THE HORROR. LOL.
Funny when Republicans trip over their bigotry on their way to free market happily-ever-after.
Limited brain cells make for limited intellect. I’m guessing Ms. Everhart also thinks people deliberately choose poverty to take advantage of all the wonderful welfare benefits offered by the Great State of Georgia…
It is stunning to see the public remarks of certain folks who claim not to be racist or homophobic. Maybe in the parallel universe where they reside these terms mean something different from what we define them as. There is no other explanation.
Someone give this woman a video, please.
Someone give ALL THESE PEOPLE a video. I think it might reduce the number of homophobes by half. And next year’s pride parade would be AMAZING.
Maybe someone should clue her in as to why December 31 is one of the most popular wedding days.
The very idea of people getting married for the 1,400 benefits available to them is just shocking. No straight person would dream of doing such a thing.
I realize that it is rude to point and laugh, but criminy! The lavender menace will marry all the women and the government will lose control of the means of human resource production.
no, they don’t teach logic.
